My eyelids fluttered open as I scanned around the unfamiliar room. My vision was blurry. It looked a bit like a hotel.
Except that I had an IV in my hand. I tried to sit up.
“Easy, ma’am,” I heard a voice say.
“How are you feeling?” I looked at the person, shocked. It was the hotel security guy.
“Um,” I replied, for lack of better words. “Can you turn down the lights please?”
“Of course,” he said, rushing to dim the lights.
I feel a bit better now. My head was killing me, and my ears were ringing. From the symptoms, I definitely suffered a concussion from the impact of the push.
I stared at the security guy, wondering what exactly he was doing here.
“I’ll get Mr. Kane at once,” he said and turned around to leave.
“Wait!” I replied, but he was already gone. My heavy staring definitely made things awkward.
I took a deep breath. I was feeling quite weak and nauseous. I tried sitting up.
“Let me help you,” Maddox said as soon as he burst through the door.
He walked toward me and turned the knob by the side, raising the bed.
“Are you comfortable?” he asked.
“Yeah,” I replied a bit stiffly. I was startled by his gentleness.
“Thank you,” I said to the hotel security guy. “I don’t think I’ve had the opportunity to properly thank you. For a moment I was so convinced I was going to die, but you literally raised me like it was the hand of God. So thank you very much.”
“It’s my pleasure, Dr. Page, and my major duty now,” he replied, smiling.
“I’ll be right outside if you need anything, Dr. Page,” Leo said before quietly stepping out of the room.
“Your duty?” I asked, raising my eyebrow.
“Yes, Nia,” Maddox butted in. “You both have not been properly introduced. That is Leo Winters, and he is your bodyguard.”
My eyes shifted from Maddox to the massive bald man. I squinted to get a clear view of him.
“Wait, what? Bodyguard?”
“Yes, Nia,” he said, taking a seat right beside me on the bed. “He’s to follow you everywhere, except when you’re at home.”
“I don’t want a…”
“This isn’t about your wants, Nia. It’s about necessity. You can’t move around unattended anymore.”
He crouched beside the bed so we were eye level.
“You would have been killed today because of me, and it hurts me so much that there wasn’t anything I could do at that point. You’re not an ordinary person anymore. You’re the girlfriend of an athlete. You haven’t seemed to come to that

realization yet.”
He stood and straightened his suit jacket, the same one he used to cover me while picking me up.
“I’m going to have a chat with the doctor.”
He turned to leave.
“Call your mom. She’s worried sick.”

My eyes widened as I fished around for my phone. The news would have circulated by now. Leo handed me a phone.
“This isn’t mine,” I said, staring at the phone Leo was holding. It was the latest iPhone.
“It’s yours now,” Maddox said and walked out of the room.
“What the hell do you mean by it’s mine now?” I called out to him as the door shut.
I collected the phone from Leo reluctantly.
My old phone sat on the bedside table nearby. The screen was cracked beyond repair.
“This isn’t mine,” I repeated, staring at the phone. It was the latest iPhone.
“It’s yours now,” Maddox said and walked out of the room.
“What the hell do you mean by it’s mine now?” I called after him as the door shut.
I unlocked it and frowned.
It had the same passcode, the same anime wallpaper, and even the same apps arranged in the exact order as my old phone.
How did he do that so fast?
I saw a ton of missed calls as I unlocked the phone. Calls from everyone, basically.
I dialed Mom immediately, and she picked on the first ring.
“Nia?” she whispered.
“Mom?” I said. Tears clouded my vision.
“I was so worried. How are you feeling?” she asked.
“I’m feeling better now, although I have a concussion. A mild one, though. But I’m fine,” I replied.
“I initially thought it was that boy calling me,” she said bitterly.
“Maddox?” I asked, surprised.
“I called, and he picked. I wanted to come pick you up. But he said I couldn’t see you,” she said.
I sighed deeply. “It’s so you won’t be targeted by paparazzi. They are like flies, and they’re ready to stalk you for days, even
months.”
“Yeah, he said that, and I completely understand,” she replied.
“What about Zara?” I asked.

“She’s here,” she replied. “Speak with her.”
“Hi, Zar Bear,” I said.
“Mamaa,” she replied. “You were pushed into a pool, Mama.”
The fear in her tiny voice nearly broke me.
Someone had told her.
Or worse, she had seen the videos online.
Tears spilled from my eyes. I couldn’t believe there was a chance that I would never have seen my daughter again.
“Yes,” I said, clearing my throat. “Mama’s fine now. I’ll be away for a few days so I’ll feel better. I’ll be home soon, okay?”
I watched as Maddox walked in and took a seat quietly.
“Okay, Mama. See you soon,” she said. I could imagine her smiling. “I wuv you.”
“I love you more, Zar Bear,” I said. More tears spilled.
Mom sniffled. “Take care of yourself, Nia.”
“I will,” I replied as she dropped the call.
