Chapter 76

Chapter 76

I woke up the next morning a bit late. Mom and Zara were already almost done preparing for work and school.

“Good morning,” Zara greeted cheerily.

“Good morning, Zar Bear,” I bent to her height to give her a hug. “How are you?”

“I’m fine,” she said, smiling.

“Good morning, Mom,” I greeted calmly, hoping she’ll let the issue of yesterday slide.

“How are you doing, Nia?” she asked, scrutinizing me.

“I’m fine, Mom,” I said, taking a seat.

“Do you like my dress, Mom?” Zara asked, giving me a twirl.

I stared at the dress. It was a polka dot playsuit I got from Mykonos.

“I love it. It’s really pretty.”

“Thank you,” she grinned, grabbing her backpack. Her bus just arrived.

I bid Zara goodbye as I walked her to the bus.

“So you’re not going to say anything about our conversation last night?” Mom asked as soon as I stepped back in.

I stood by the door, fighting the urge to roll my eyes.

“What does Maddox have to say about all this?” she asked, walking into the living room and placing both hands on her hip.

“He called me yesterday to tell me that we’ll be having a meeting with her legal team. Apparently, he filed a lawsuit against them without my consent,” I explained as I took a seat.

Mom took a deep breath. “I never thought I’ll see the day when I’ll agree with that boy.”

“Mom, I’ve told him to withdraw the…”

“There’s no way in hell he’ll do that. One thing I know about that boy is that he’s stubborn. You won’t be able to convince him, and if you do, I’ll file a lawsuit against him.”

I stared at her with my mouth agape as she walked out of the house, viciously fuming.

My phone beeped, and I checked to see a message from Maddox, and I groaned.

“The meeting has been slated for 2pm on Monday.”

That was all, short and straight to the point. He didn’t even bother to ask about my opinion.

It was currently Sunday evening. Friday and Saturday went by in a blur as I didn’t really have much to do. I stayed indoors throughout, unwinding with Zara and Mom. I really needed the slow days.

Although I had to return to the condo today as I had to go to work tomorrow because of that meeting. Natalie was currently on her way. I haven’t seen her since the incident.

“Mamaa,” Zara said, running up to my room. “Aunty Natie is coming.”

“Natalie,” 1 corrected gently as we walked down the stairs.

“Natie,” she said again.

“Let the girl be. She’s free to call me whatever she wants,” Natalie said, pinching her cheeks.

“I missed you,” I said, pulling her into a hug.

“I missed you more,” she replied as we rocked from side to side.

“Good evening, ma’am,” Natalie greeted Mom.

“I don’t know how many times I’ll tell you to call me by my name,” Mom said, folding her arm.

“I’m sorry, Elena,” Natalie said, smiling.

“You all are making me feel old. I can’t even remember the last time I heard my name,” Mom said, rolling her eyes.

“You’re far from old,” Natalie replied, feeding her delusions.

“Exactly,” Mom replied with a smile and taking a seat. “Now that you’re here, you can finally talk some sense into your friend. I don’t understand why she has refused to be reasonable. She didn’t want to press charges against that girl that tried to kill her.”

I turned my back to them and walked up the stairs. I’m sick and tired of having this particular conversation over and over again.

That’s the thing with Mom. Once she decides to talk about something, she’ll make sure that I get tired of it. She hasn’t realised the more she talks about it, the less inclined I am to bend to her will.

I don’t know if she hasn’t realized or she just doesn’t care.

I took a quick shower and got dressed in a black linen two-piece. I paired it with my pink Chanel slippers and a matching bag. I packed a couple of stuff into my duffel bag and was ready to leave. I booked an Uber before heading down the stairs.

“I’ll miss you, Mama,” Zara said with teary eyes.

“I’ll miss you more, Baby. Don’t cry, okay?” I picked her up. “Be on your best behaviour, and I’ll be back before you even

know it.”

“Okay, Mama.” I pecked her on both cheeks before putting her down.

“Bye, Mom,” I said as I walked out.

“Talk some sense into her head, please,” I heard Mom say to Natalie as I walked out of the house.

I really didn’t want to keep going round in circles.

“Good evening, ma’am.”

I stared at Leo in shock. “Um, hi? Where’s my Uber?”

“I had him cancel the ride,” he said simply. “Mr. Kane instructed me not to let you out of my sight once you’re out of your house.”
