Chapter 75

Leg dropped me off at home, but I discharged him. I didn’t have the energy to explain to Mom why I have a 6ft 4 bald- headed man with a stoic facial expression following me everywhere.
I laid down on the bed in my room, wearing my bed-rot outfit: pyjamas shorts, my old college hoodie, and socks.
I put my phone on do-not-disturb after replying to all the messages from my friends. I’ve been putting it off for a while. They all sounded really worried, even Liam texted too.
It’s funny how I met all these amazing people from being Maddox’s fake girlfriend. I can’t help but wonder if we’ll still be friends if Maddox wasn’t in the picture.
I remained that way on the bed until I heard Mom’s car pull over in the driveway. She’s back a bit early. I got off the bed and took the stairs down.
“Mamaaa,” Zara said, running into my arms.
“My baby,” I picked her up.
“Nia, oh my goodness,” Mom said, walking up to me. I put Zara down and gave Mom a hug as she was sniffling.
I can’t even remember the last time I hugged my own mother.
“I’m okay, Mom. I promise I am.” I wish she would stop crying. She’s going to make me start crying too.
“Are you sad, Gigi?” Zara asked my mom.
“No, I’m not,” she quickly wiped her eyes with her sleeve. “I’m not sad at all.”
“Why are you crying then?” she pressed.
“Happy tears, Zara. These are happy tears.”
I chuckled at their little exchange.
“Shower time,” I said, picking Zara up. “I’ll be with you soon, Mom.”
I took Zara upstairs, gave her a good shower before bringing her down to have her meal.
I wanted to cook when I came, but I then discovered that Mom has prepared meals for the week. She probably wasn’t expecting me to be back so soon.
Mom had already popped the food into the microwave as we came down. She made rice with stewed tuna, and it was delicious as usual. Mom is such a good cook, one of the best. I may be sounding a bit biased, but it’s true, although she’s terrible at baking.
We had our late lunch, and the rest of the day went by in a blur until it was time for Zara to go to bed. It’s been a while since we last had an evening like this.
“How are you feeling?” Mom asked as I returned from tucking Zara in.
“I’m okay.” I replied.
“I mean, how do you really feel with what happened to you and all,” she crossed her legs and turned to face me.
“I feel a lot better than I did yesterday,” I said honestly. “I’ve made peace with it. Almost dying is not fun. I’m grateful I had people to aid me at that particular time.”

“That’s all?” she asked. “No anger or resentment?”
“Not at this moment,” I replied. “It might come later depending on what the future actions look like.”
“Speaking on future actions?” she asked, resting her chin on her palm. “Aren’t you going to press charges?”
“I’m not.” I said softly.
“Why?” she asked, shocked. “Are you out of your mind?”
I stared at her face. Her jaw was clenched.
“I don’t want any form of drama.”

“Someone tried to kill you, and you’re talking about drama?” she stared at me in disbelief. “Did she think about the crowd in front of her before pushing you almost to your death? She’s obviously bloody thirsty, and you’re worried about drama?”
“Mom, please…”
“She would have killed you?” she yelled. “Do you not understand that?”
“Mom, please. You’ll wake Zara up,” I said, rising to my feet.
“You’re running away?” she said, shaking her head. “Go ahead then. You know what I’m saying is right.”
I walked to my room without saying a word. I really don’t want issues. I don’t know what Bella is capable of, and I’m not willing to find out. If she can cause me harm in front of people, Lord only knows what she’ll do when it’s just us.
I can’t handle another confrontation with her. I was blinded by my rage. That was the only reason I could get my words out as she towered over me.
I really couldn’t.
I really can’t, and Trey… I don’t know what to do about him. Maddox hasn’t really said anything. I know that it means that he’s working on it. If I wanted Trey to disappear, he probably can make it happen.
If Bella can push me into a pool in front of a hundred people minimum, anything can happen. I believe this near-death experience that I just had has given me a paradigm shift.
I have a completely different perspective now. Bella is a lot more dangerous than I thought. I expected her to be the regular blonde bimbo, but she really isn’t. She is diabolical.
I have to be really careful around her. The earlier I’m done with this arrangement, the better for me.
I can’t believe it took me this long to realise the kind of person I was up against.
It was a few minutes after nine, so I decided to call it an early night. I turned off the lights except my sunset lamp. I’m not really a fan of the dark.
Alone at least. I didn’t like to be alone in the dark. As long as I had someone with me, even if it was Zara, I’ll be okay. I can’t remember the exact point when I developed this phobia.
My phone rang as I got comfy in bed. It was Maddox.
“Nia,” he said calmly.
