Chapter 92
The Pilates session left my muscles pleasantly sore in a way I had not felt in a long time.
Sweat still clung to the back of my neck, but I couldn’t stop smiling. My muscles ached in the satisfying way that made me feel like I’d actually accomplished something.
I had always stuck to home workouts and yoga because my social anxiety made the thought of stepping into a regular gym feel impossible.
After class, we found a cute open-air café not far from the studio. The afternoon sun filtered through the umbrellas as we claimed a table and ordered drinks. I stretched my legs under the table, still feeling the burn in my thighs.
“I can still feel the burn at the back of my thighs,” Vera moaned, rubbing her legs.
“Bitch, it was your idea,” Jamie shot back.
“Damn girl, I’ve never seen you like this before,” Edna snickered. “I didn’t even know you could curse.”
“That’s because Mr. Hale’s mighty assistant,” she said with air quotes, “always brings out the worst in people.”
“Girl, chill,” Vera chuckled.
“We’re going shopping after this,” I interjected, taking a slow sip of my matcha. The cool, earthy taste felt refreshing after the workout.
“Yay, shopping,” Edna replied brightly.
“I’m good to head home,” Jamie muttered.
“What’s going on, girl?” I turned to her, laughing softly. “You’re usually the cheerful one.”
“I’ve exhausted my cheerfulness for the week,” she sighed, slumping a little in her chair. “I desperately need a refill.”
“Browsing through clothes should do that,” Natalie said. The rest of the girls nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, I know,” Jamie paused, a blush creeping across her cheeks. “But I’ve ordered a quicker refill.”
“Wait!” Edna leaned forward, eyes sparkling with curiosity. “You called your man?”
Jamie covered her face with both hands, peeking out shyly between her fingers.
“Girl, you better start talking,” Vera playfully scolded.
“Yeah, I did…”
The loud rumble of a motorbike cut her off mid-sentence.
We all turned as the bike pulled up smoothly in front of the café. The rider wore full black protective gear, looking tall and imposing even from a distance.
“Babe,” Jamie jumped up and ran to him. He dismounted and scooped her into his arms without hesitation.
“Hi, baby,” he said in a rich Italian accent. He removed his helmet, revealing silvery blonde hair that looked almost white under the sunlight. “Are you ready to leave?”
“Yes, I am. Let me grab my purse real quick.” He set her down gently on the pavement.
“Bye, guys.” Jamie called, grabbing her purse and walking back to him.
He handed her his helmet. She wrapped her arms tightly around his waist, and they zoomed off. His wavy hair flared in the wind behind them.
I turned back to the table. The girls looked even more stunned than I felt.
“I can’t believe that,” Edna said out loud.
“I know, right? I never expected her to date someone like him,” Vera replied.
“Someone like him?” Natalie asked, voicing exactly what I was thinking.
“Not someone like him. Sorry, that came out wrong,” Vera apologized quickly.
“But I get what you’re trying to say,” Edna added. “He’s a pro MMA fighter. Famous for being stoic and cold.”
“Yes, exactly,” Vera jumped in. “If Maddox is a beast, he’s a vampire.”
“A vampire?” Natalie and I said at the same time.
“That’s the easiest way to explain it,” Vera said. “He doesn’t show emotion. No smiles, no frowns. Nothing at all.”
“And to think cutesy little Jamie is his girlfriend?” Edna said, still wide-eyed.
“I never even knew she could curse, let alone date a vampire,” I chuckled. “They make a cute couple though.”
“So stinking cute,” Natalie cooed. “The way he picked her up…”
“They’re really cute,” Edna agreed.
“That’s by the way,” Vera said, clapping her hands together. “It’s time for shopping.”
“Yeah, let’s go,” we all stood up, paid for our drinks, and headed toward the parking area.
“I’ll book an Uber,” Edna said, pulling out her phone.
