~Connor~
Something was wrong.
The second I stepped into that hallway, I felt it. I didn’t just sense it..I fucking knew. My wolf tensed. My skin prickled. My blood changed direction like it had one purpose only..to get back to her. I could hear her heartbeat through the door. It was fast.
I didn’t knock.
I didn’t ask for permission.
I shoved the fucking door open so hard it slammed into the wall behind it and nearly came off its hinges.
And then I saw her.
Lily.
My mate.
My girl.
She was sprawled across the exam table, her legs still open, her head lolling slightly to the side, her lips parted like she had just stopped whispering my name.
There was a metal tray beside her, smeared with blood. A used syringe. A long thin instrument glinting under the lights. Her body looked limp. Her skin looked cold. Her scent was tainted.
And she wasn’t moving.
The doctor turned around slowly, as if this was normal, as if I wouldn’t tear her fucking spine out for what she’d done.
“You weren’t supposed to be in here yet..”
I didn’t let her finish that sentence.
I was on her in less than a second. My hand wrapped around her throat. My body slammed hers into the nearest wall so hard I heard it crack. Probably her shoulder. Maybe the wall. I didn’t give a fuck.
“What the fuck did you do to her?”
“What did you put in her body?”
“She’s fine. I only used a mild sedative..”
“She’s unconscious. Her scent is changing. Her pulse is off. That’s not fucking fine.”
I released her throat only long enough to grab the collar of her coat and throw her across the room like she weighed nothing. Her body crashed into the metal tool cart. Everything dropped to the floor.
There was another man in the room. I hadn’t even noticed him. He’d been standing in the shadows, pretending to take notes, pretending to be invisible.
I turned to him.
He backed up fast, but I was faster.
I gripped him by the neck and slammed him into the cabinet with so much force the wood split behind his skull. His clipboard dropped to the floor. His eyes widened. His mouth opened.
“You touched her?”
He didn’t speak.
I squeezed harder.
“I said, did you fucking touch her?”
He choked. Shook his head. Tried to say something.
I slammed him again. Once. Then twice. Then again. Until blood streaked down the cabinet and his body slid to the floor.
I didn’t care if he was dead. I didn’t even look back,
I turned to Lily.
She was stirring now.
Her lashes fluttered. Her fingers twitched. She whispered something.
“Connor…”
“What’s wrong, baby? Talk to me.”
I cupped her cheek, trying to keep my hands steady, trying to breathe through the rage clawing at my ribs. Her skin was too cold. Her lashes trembled like she was stuck in a nightmare she couldn’t wake from.
My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would fucking crack open. She was here. She was alive. But something was wrong. Something inside her had shifted.
I leaned closer, brushing my fingers gently down her throat, listening for the rhythm that should’ve been there.
“Your scent has fucking changed,” I whispered, the words thick with panic. “It’s not just you anymore. It’s… twisted. Like they tried to take something from you.”
My hands slid down to her belly. Not to check for a pup. Not yet. I didn’t even care about that right now. I just needed to feel the warmth of her body. The proof that she was still fighting.
But what gutted me..what made my wolf start to growl in my throat..was the silence.
“I can’t hear your wolf.”
The second I said it, the room felt colder.
That bond. That voice. That presence that was always there, even when she was asleep or scared or too shy to say what she really wanted..it was gone.
I gripped the edge of the table, my fingers digging into the metal like I could squeeze time into reversing.
“Where is she, Lily?” I muttered, like maybe she could still hear me. “Where the fuck is your wolf?”
Her lips moved again. Slower this time. More careful. Like her mind was swimming through thick fog just to reach me.
“Gone,” she finally said, and that one word nearly stopped my heart.
I gritted my teeth and forced the words out.
“Did the doctor do this to you?”
Her eyelids fluttered. Her lips parted. She let out the faintest breath of air. And then she whispered.
“Yes,”
And then she passed out.
Her head dropped to the side. Her hand went limp in mine. Her body stopped trembling.
That was it.
That was the final fucking straw.
“You’re so dead.”
She tried to crawl backward. “Wait…please..”
“Who sent you?”
Her eyes flicked toward the door, then back to me. “You wouldn’t understand.”
I yanked her up by the hair. “Try me.’”
She winced. Her lips trembled. “It wasn’t supposed to kill her. Just silence the wolf. She’s too powerful. Too connected. They said…
“Who?” I growled, shaking her hard enough that her teeth clattered together. “Who the fuck said that?”
“Your ex–wife,” she gasped.
Everything stopped.
My grip tightened until she screamed.
“What did you just say?”
“She planned it,” the doctor stammered. “She said the girl had to be neutralized. That if you bonded fully, she’d lose you forever. She paid us to…”
That was as far as she got before my claws pierced her throat.
Blood sprayed across my arm as her body went limp, eyes still open, mouth frozen mid- confession.
I let her drop.
The other man was still on the ground, barely breathing. I kicked him once–hard–just to make sure he never stood up again.
Then I went back to Lily.
Her pulse was faint, but it was there. I pressed my forehead to hers.
“You hear me, baby? You hold on. I’m going to fix this. No one touches you again. No one hurts you again. I’ll kill them all.”
That was the mistake I made. Reaching for her. Reaching for Lily.
The second my fingers touched her skin…boom. Something stabbed into the side of
“What the fuck…?”
I jerked back. My whole body twitched. My hand flew up and felt it…
Needle.
my neck.
Watch Her Bleed
“Shit. Shit. No. No…”
I staggered, caught myself on the table, but my knees were already going. My vision was skipping. My jaw locked. My arms–fuck–my arms weren’t moving right.
“Not now. Not fucking now.”
I turned. Tried to shift.
Nothing.
Tried again. Felt my back crack like it wanted to shift, but my wolf was trapped. Like something was tying him down inside me. Like someone poured concrete in my bones and said stay.
“You sons of bitches,” I growled, loud. “You fucking did something to me.”
“Well, Alpha,” she said
“it would seem you’re not the strongest after all.”
I stared at her. Couldn’t move. Couldn’t shift. Just breathing like a man trying not to black out.
Her eyes glittered. She stepped closer, crouched until her face was right next to mine. “What’s wrong? Can’t talk now? No clever threats? No roar of the big bad Alpha?” She dragged a blood- slick finger down my cheek. “Pathetic.”
She laughed. “Relax. You’re not dying.” She leaned even closer, whispering against my ear. “It wasn’t poison.”
My heart kicked once.
“It’s a nerve inhibitor,” she went on. “A little serum that tells every muscle in that perfect body of yours to shut up. You’re awake for everything. You feel everything. You just can’t move. Isn’t that poetic?”
She straightened and looked me over like I was a specimen in a lab. “You should’ve seen your face when it hit. All that pride leaking out through your eyes. The great Alpha brought to his knees by a woman with a syringe.”
Her tone sharpened, eyes narrowing. “Your kind always think strength is in your fists, in your teeth, in how loud you growl. You never understood it’s in control. And right now?” She spread her blood- stained hands. “I have all of it.”
I forced a sound, choking. “You don’t… know… what you’ve done.”
“Oh, I do,” she said softly. “I just don’t care. When your heart slows, they’ll come collect her. Maybe they’ll keep her alive. Maybe they’ll finish the job. Depends on how loud she screams.”
Her smile turned devilish. “And you? You’ll lie here and watch her being taken away while you can’t move an inch.”
“I’ll find her. I’ll find her even if I gotta rip the world apart to do it. I’ll crawl over broken streets, I’ll burn every light in every house until I smell the place she’s hiding. I’ll tear doors off hinges with my teeth if I have to. I’ll find her. You’ll see me. You’ll see me come for you”.
“Make sure this thing buries me forever, I rasped, because the second I move the first thing I’m doing is coming for you. Make sure you paralyze me proper, because when I stand up I’m not stopping. I will kill you. I will kill every last one of your bloodline. I will make your name a thing children cry at.
The doctor looked at me like I’d made a joke and she liked the punchline. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and smiled like someone who eats puppies for breakfast.
“Shut the fuck up”
She leaned in and kissed the air near my throat like she was tasting victory. “When you pass out,” she said.
“They’ll come for her. Maybe they keep her. Maybe they finish her. Either way you won’t be able to save her”
“I’ll find you,” I said, barely, before the black swallowed my vision slowly. “I’ll find you, I’ll find her, I’ll make you pay.”
She leaned down again, her breath hot on my jaw. “That’s what happens when you think you’re untouchable.”
Then darkness came
