Dark Queen Of Apocalypse (by Morgan Hale) novel Chapter 295

Chapter 295

0014

Even though the world had gone to hell, people still clung to the old ways. They believed that only by sticking with the official forces could they have a shot at survival.

Chloe had shown she was tough on the road, but in the end, Blaze Haven was just a small, unknown base.

Everyone exchanged glances, but no one got off the truck.

A few of them looked hesitant, unsure what to do.

Deep down, they wanted to stick with the main group, but the battles they’d witnessed along the way were still fresh in their minds. That team was seriously impressive.

They wanted to get off, but were afraid they’d end up regretting their choice.

After a long while, nobody got off in the end.

Chloe had expected this and just shrugged indifferently.

She never expected these survivors to join Blaze Haven anyway. The troops were with the official forces, and if she were in their place, she’d probably make the same call.

It was understandable.

Just as Chloe was about to turn and leave with her team, she heard some timid voices behind her.

Wait.About a dozen people slowly climbed down from the truck. They looked gaunt and pale, already showing signs of dehydration. In their state, if they kept going, they wouldn’t even make it to Bluehaven Base alive.

Mostly women and children, with a few seniors: five young women, six children, and eight seniors in total.

Staying behind wasn’t really a choice for them. They were already frail, suffered from carsickness, and with the heat, staying was inevitable.

William felt bad for them and was about to call out a few of the stronger survivors to stay and help, but Chloe stopped him.

This group is fine. No need to push anyone,Chloe said.

Oh, right, do you want to take the supplies you left in my space now?Chloe suddenly thought of something

There was a ton of stuff, and the army’s spacepowered guy clearly didn’t have enough room in his space to haul it all. Plus, the pickup trucks were already crammed full of people.

William hesitated for a moment, then said, Captain Yates, is it possible for us to borrow some vehicles from your base!

Chloe still had a bunch of pickups in her space, all traded for supplies with Bluchaven Base earlier

Sure,she replied.

She waved her hand, and in an instant, a dozen trucks appeared out of nowhere, leaving the survivory staring in shock.

Holy crap, did you see that? She just made trucks appear out of thin air! That’s insane!one of them blurted out

So what if she’s strong? It’s still just a small base,” another scoffed

Yeah, she turned down a spot with the official forces, and she’s just a woman trying to run her own base. She’s got no clue, someone else chimed in.

That deepseated contempt for women was ingrained in them. No matter how capable Chloe was, they just couldn’t bring themselves to respect her.

Most people kept quiet, just watching the scene unfold and thinking about everything they’d seen from Chloe’s team along the way. Some started to reconsider their choices, feeling a bit uneasy.

Chloe had no clue what the survivors in the trucks were thinking. She simply advised, You should cut up the mutant beast meat and airdry it during the journey. Otherwise, it’ll spoil before you even get to the base.”

Got it,” William replied.

James handled it. He used his powers to quickly slice the mutant beast meat into chunks and put them in each truck. With daytime temperatures hitting over 122 degrees, leave mutant beast meat out for a day, and they would dry into jerky. The only problem was that they just didn’t have enough time.

Every extra day out here meant more danger.

Chloe paused, thinking.

Alright, here’s the plan. I’ve still got a bunch of jerky from Radiant Base. Take some for now, it’ll help in a pinch. As for your mutant beast meat, I’ll keep it safe in my space. When I swing by your base later, I’ll bring it over,Chloe said.

Alright,William replied.

That way, they’d have way less trouble while traveling.

At least they wouldn’t have to worry about mutant beasts or zombies stealing their supplies.

They’d taken down so many mutant beasts before, even a hundred trucks wouldn’t be enough to carry it all.

The mutated beasts were huge. Each weighed tens of tons, let alone all the smaller ones.

William and his crew left, taking three trucks loaded with jerky. That haul would keep their base fed for a long time if they were careful.

As they were leaving, another twenty or so survivors stepped off the trucks. No exceptions, all of them were either elderly or kids.

The young and ablebodied were still set on joining the big base.

William sighed. They had no clue what they were missing out on. If it weren’t for his official status, he’d be tempted to jom Blaze Haven himself.

The army convoy departed, leaving behind thirty or so survivors who gazed after them, uncertainty and dread flickering in their eyes as they wondered what the future would bring.

After all, they were just ordinary folks without any powers, in poor health, unable to hunt or do much of anything. They were pretty much helpless.

When Chloe looked their way, they instinctively shivered.

She gave them a gentle smile. Welcome to Blaze Haven.

Emily and the others dropped their serious looks and walked over with smiles, each pushing a small cart.

Under everyone’s puzzled gazes, they lifted the white cloths on the carts, revealing rows of big bread.

The sound of people gulping filled the air, their eyes locked onto the bread, not daring to blink in case they vanished in an

nstant.

Someone wondered, What does this mean?

Are they showing off these breads to motivate us? If we work hard, we’ll get to eat them?

No one dared to believe these breads were actually meant for them. Right now, in the apocalypse, even a moldy piece of read could buy a life. Let alone fresh bread.

ut just smelling that aroma felt like a blessing in this lifetime.

veryone’s eyes went wide, necks stretched as far as they could, desperately staring into the carts, imagining themselves inking their teeth into those mouthwatering breads.

¡efore the apocalypse, nobody would have cared for the simple bread. Now, tasting one was something people could only

ream about.

Damn, that smells so good. If I could just have one last meal with those buns before I die, that’d be heaven, someone hought.

veryone had the same thought, secretly promising themselves they’d work their tails off, just hoping to earn a bite of those nouthwatering breads.

One sharp kid was about to pledge undying loyalty, ready to swear he’d follow Chloe to the end, when suddenly hearing

Welcome to Blaze Haven! Each of you gets two breads and a cold drink. Think of it as a little welcome treat,Chloe smiled.

Someone exclaimed, What?

Everyone stared, totally stunned, eyes wide with disbelief.

A woman rubbed her ear in disbelief, then pointed at the cart with a trembling finger, swallowing hard.

Are you saying these breads are really for us?she stammered.

Gulping sounds filled the air.

Everyone was swallowing hard, the sound echoing through the crowd.

Even with the breads in their hands, they still couldn’t believe it was real.

Some people wolfed them down, while others just took a tiny bite and stashed the rest away as if it was treasure, afraid it might vanish if they blinked.

Emily puffed up with pride. Breads like this? At Blaze Haven, they’re a regular sight. As long as you put in the work and don’t slack off, you’ll never go hungry here.

That’s no exaggeration. Blaze Haven had taken over all of Grovenwich. This place was massive, but now, even with everyone. counted, there were barely more than a hundred people left in a city built for millions.
