Chapter 45
Chapter 45
At the corner, Emily moved quietly up to the seventh floor.
She turned and whispered, “Chloe, I’ll keep watch here. Try to be quick.”
“I have a bad feeling about the first floor. Let’s go together, just in case,” Chloe said.
Emily closed her eyes, sensed the area, and then listened intently. A puzzled look crossed her face. “There’s nothing on the first floor.”
“Tonight won’t be quiet. Let’s hurry,” Chloe insisted.
They quickly made their way up. The seventh floor was a large supermarket. Most of the food had already been taken by others, but plenty still remained.
Chloe only gathered some inconspicuous items.
“Chloe, over here. There’s a whole lot of pasta and flour here,” Emily called out.
In the grain section, various types of pasta were stacked. Since it was all raw, the survivors hadn’t taken any.
“We can’t take these,” Chloe said. She didn’t want to reveal she had a spiritual space.
“Look here.” Emily opened the cabinet under the sacks of pasta. It was packed with even more pasta and flour.
Chloe gave her a thumbs-up. “No wonder you’re a spirit-powered human.”
It was the first time Emily had been praised. Her cheeks flushed. Finally, she could contribute.
Suddenly, Emily’s expression twisted. “The first floor. A huge wave of mutated spiders just rushed in from outside.”
Her face shifted from worry to sheer terror.
“How many?” Chloe froze.
“I have no idea. Thousands, and maybe tens of thousands. They’re still pouring in, and they’re climbing to the second floor. They’re not stopping. They’re coming higher,” Emily stammered, panic rising in her voice.
They rushed down to the sixth floor. Everyone was still asleep. Caden was shaken awake, his eyes red and bleary. He looked ready to snap, but when he saw Chloe, he swallowed his anger.
“What’s going on?” he muttered.
“Trouble downstairs, Wake everyone up. We need to get ready to fight,” Chloe said urgently.
“What?” Caden scrambled out of bed just as Abdiel ran up from downstairs, breathless and terrified.
“C-Caden… s-something’s wrong. Spiders. So many spiders,” he stammered.
His eyes were wide with fear, and he reeked of urine.
Abdiel was so loud that most survivors jolted awake. The timid ones huddled back, scared stiff
Many looked dismissive. Just spiders? What’s there to be afraid of? Haven’t you seen spiders before?”
“Seriously, what a fuss.” someone grumbled, annoyed at being woken up.

One guy sneered, “You’re supposed to be powered humans, and you’re scared of spiders? Bunch of cowards.”
Chloe smirked coldly. These survivors probably hadn’t seen a mutated insect yet. They were way worse than zombies.
Damir stood up, squinted at Abdiel, and burst out laughing. “Abdiel, really? A few spiders and you’re pissing yourself? And you call yourselves powered humans?”
The survivors behind him all laughed.
To them, spiders were just tiny bugs no bigger than a fingernail.
Seeing Abdiel being mocked, Caden shot the crowd a look that was half-smirk, half-glare.
Abdiel was honest. He wouldn’t make something up.
