Chapter 48

Chapter 48

“Okay” Emily caught the bundle Chloe tossed her, a mix of zombie cores and a few mutant cores,

“If we hold out for three hours, we’re clear” Chloe said.

Emily nodded firmly.

Then Chloe turned to the group. A slow, eerie smile spread across her face.

It sent a chill down everyone’s spine.

“Let’s make a deal,” she said.

Caden and Damir exchanged glances. “W-what kind of deal?”

Chloe glanced at the endless sea of first-level spiders outside. “I’ll keep you alive. But from now on, in every fight, you follow my orders.”

After a pause, she added, “And every core from the killed spiders is mine.”

“Why should you call the shots?” the group protested. “We’re all risking our lives here. Why do you get all the cores?”

Chloe didn’t explain. She kept her eyes on the outside, alert.

“If you’re in, get behind me. If not, don’t come crying when things get rough.” Her voice turned hard. “Let me be clear. I’m a third-level powered human now. I’m your only chance to survive this.”

Caden’s eyes widened. “You? A third-level one? We haven’t even seen a second-level one yet.”

Chloe didn’t answer.

Emily was the first to step behind her.

Dustin followed silently, his eyes never leaving her. “I trust you,” he said quietly

Mindy stepped up beside him. “I trust you too.”

Once a dancer, her sexy curves had nearly made her a target after the apocalypse.

If she hadn’t awakened her fire-powered abilities in time, she probably wouldn’t have made it out with her dignity intact.

There were three women inside. Of course, she didn’t trust the men in the group.

And being the observant type, she’d noticed right away that the corner where the barrels of gasoline were supposed to be was empty.

But Chloe gave her a vibe, mysterious and powerful, like she could handle anything.

With Chloe-leading, her small crew claimed the east corner. The rest huddled in the west.

“Chloe, have you lost your mind? Splitting up

now?” Caden barked.

Damir glared. “This gas is ours. We found it

Caden softened his tone, trying to reason. “Who knows if any of us will make it? Shouldn’t we stick together? There are plenty of cores out there. Let’s just take what we can get.”

Chloe thought for a moment. “Fine, but I want the Spider King’s core”

A collective gasp swept through the group.

“Seriously? You’ll bite off more than you can chew. Worry about surviving first!” someone sneered.

The Spid King outside had keen hearing. The arrogant claim from its trapped prey sent it into a frenzy.

dn’t hesitate. He lit a lighter and tossed it into the fuel-soaked chaos outside.

fening blast echoed from outside, followed by the crackle of raging flames and the thick, acrid smell of burning rolling

Gasoline really hit hard. The entire twelfth floor erupted into raging flames in an instant, thick smoke billowing everywhere.

With a single gesture, Chloe conjured a thick wall of ice where the glass doors had been, sealing out the fire and smoke.

She casually pulled a box of matches from her pack.

Emily stared. “Chloe, you actually carry those?”

Matches, a simple fire-starting tool from the last century, were something she’d stumbled upon and kept. It was safer than lighters, which could explode near flames.

The fire raged for ten solid minutes. Peering through the ice wall, they saw only ash outside.

Dotting the ground were glowing cores, each the size of a baby’s fist.

“We’re rich. We’re seriously rich,” Emily shouted, unable to contain herself.

Caden and Damir stared, saliva practically dripping as they eyed the cores.

“Open the wall, and let us out!” they yelled.

Chloe ignored them. But the other powered humans weren’t waiting. They hacked at the ice, soon carving a hole and scrambling through.

Cores were scattered everywhere.

“Someone, help!”

It was then they noticed two figures crawling toward them through the ash. In the dim light, their faces were barely recognizable.
