“It was likely tampered with while the car was stopped. It’s been four hours since we picked you and Mrs. Sanchez up. The tire’s been slowly losing air the whole time. Whoever did it timed it so it would fail during our return trip… If we hadn’t been delayed by those two men, it might have blown out completely once we hit the highway,” the bodyguard said.
A chill ran down everyone’s spine. A blowout on the highway would have been unthinkable. In a strange way, those men showing up had actually delayed the crisis.
But was this a warning, or a heads-up?
Natalie’s voice was tight. “Leonardo, it looks like those people have been watching us for a while.”
The enemy was in the shadows, while we were in the light. Someone was targeting Silver- Maned Pack, targeting me. Natalie’s first thought was worry-worry that my body couldn’t withstand another major trauma. She looked at me, her eyes cold, her lips parting without sound.
I cupped the back of her neck, speaking softly to calm her, “It’s okay. We’re safe.”
My tone was even, but the glance I shot out the window was dark.
“Get a team. Find those two men and bring them in. I want a full report by morning on exactly what happened to this car and who’s responsible. Also, file another report with the police.” I gave the orders, my voice devoid of warmth.
I didn’t blame the bodyguards for today’s lapse. That only seemed to make them more uneasy. They moved quickly to carry out my commands.
The driver arranged for another car nearby to take us the rest of the way home. This time, the drive was exceptionally smooth. The night was deep, and everything seemed calm again.
But Natalie couldn’t seem to relax. I held her hand the whole time, keeping her close.
“Are you scared?” I asked. Her face was pale. Even in the dim car, I could feel her tension when I touched her cool cheek.
She said, “You’re so calm. We could have been in a serious accident today…”
“Our car has a high safety rating, especially the back seat. Even if something did happen, I’d shield you. I’d be your last line of defense. I’d never let you get hurt,” I cut her off, my voice gentle but my gaze intense.

This wasn’t just reassurance; it was a promise. In my instincts, protecting my mate came above everything else.
Natalie’s POV:
Coming from anyone else, words like that would just be comfort. But I knew Leonardo meant every single one of them with absolute seriousness. He’d analyzed the consequences so thoroughly, but in all those possible outcomes, only my safety mattered. He hadn’t considered the danger to himself at all.
I was touched, but also a little angry. “And what about you? If you shield me, what if something happens to you…”
Even suggesting it made my heart ache. Thinking back to what happened in the mountains… I couldn’t go through that a second time.
Him nearly leaving me-once was enough.
“I’ll be fine,” he murmured, nuzzling my cheek and neck, his kisses soft and soothing. But I wasn’t in the mood for that right now.
I pushed him away gently. “How can you be so sure? Do you have some kind of superpower or what? Have you forgotten when you saved that girl…”
He’d almost died saving that little girl. If he were gone, what would I do?
I knew the deep-seated integrity and sense of justice in him. Every word of his promise carried immense weight. I loved that about him, but I also wished he could be a little more selfish and take better care of himself.
“You promised me,” I said, feeling the need to remind him. “You can’t just think about sacrificing yourself from now on. Even loving me doesn’t require that. Protecting yourself first is a way of loving me, too.”
I hooked my finger with his. “Promise me. If we’re ever in danger together, you save yourself first. That’s normal, even for bonded mates.”
Leonardo’s POV:
“I can’t do that.” Normally, I’d agree to anything Natalie asked.
Listening to my mate was the most important thing. But today was different. Danger had been right there. If it really came down to it, I couldn’t promise her I wouldn’t sacrifice myself for
her.
Beneath my gentleness was an unshakable love and a protective instinct. She understood that.
