Chapter 106 The Price of a Fix
Kaleb was a mess. He paced back and forth, torn over whether to spend that huge chunk of money.

He had no background and no powerful family behind him. A young founder with no connections, investors never took him seriously. Getting more funding was hard. Last time, he drank himself sick at a pitch meeting, ended up in the hospital, and still got played.
He really couldn’t bear to part with that 15 million dollars.
Ayla looked at this unlucky guy and got annoyed just looking at him. Halle was right. If she had a brother like Kaleb, she’d lose years off her life.
She walked up to him. Seeing the anger on his face, she softened her tone.

“I said I’ll help you, and I will. One week. If you don’t believe me, I’m not explaining anything. You’ll see by then.”
Kaleb frowned. “How am I supposed to trust you?”
Ayla snatched the cigarette from his fingers and put it out in the ashtray. “You’ll get your answer in a few days. Just wait.”
Before leaving, she added, “And stop smoking. If you really must, don’t do it in front of me.”
Then she walked out.
Kaleb watched her leave and scoffed. “Acting like some big sister. Who does she think I am, a three–year–old? Who’s going to listen to her? Ridiculous.”
He lit another cigarette, stared at the glowing tip… then his expression changed. After a long moment, he put it out again.
So annoying. She shouldn’t have come to his company at all.
A while later, he still hadn’t decided whether to spend the money. He thought of Ayla’s confidence and went to check on the tech department.
Everyone was gone.
Kaleb stopped cold.
The company hadn’t gone bankrupt yet. Why was nobody working?
Emmett returned after walking Ayla out. “Ayla told them to get off early.”
“She did?”
“She said there was nothing else to do tonight.”
Kaleb almost exploded. “Where’s the director?”
“He left first. Practically ran out.”

Kaleb groaned. “Zane poached all our core engineers, and this is what’s left? What a joke.”
Emmett asked, “Do you really think Ayla can handle it?”
The director hadn’t told him anything. He clearly just wanted to go home and sleep.
Kaleb snapped, “If she really solved it, would they be so calm? They’d be carrying her around like a goddess.”
Emmett added, “Not just them. Kaleb, you’d be carrying Ayla around too.”
Kaleb fell silent.
He had not considered that possibility.
Then Emmett asked again, “So are you spending the 15 million dollars or not? Time doesn’t wait. If that expert takes another job, we’re finished.”
Kaleb stared at the empty company floor. After a long moment, he clenched his jaw. “Call him to the office
tomorrow.”
He couldn’t wait anymore.
“Okay,” Emmett said.
He had tested Ayla earlier. Ayla said she wouldn’t invest anything less than a hundred million dollars next time.
Now that was a real investor.
Spending 15 million dollars suddenly didn’t feel so painful.
Once Ayla’s repair model was plugged in, the database needed time to copy files, update configurations, and reboot. It would take the entire day to finish loading.
Ayla worked nonstop, writing code to build a new firewall. She worked until two in the morning. Hungry, she ordered food and kept working while waiting for it to arrive.
Even at this hour, delivery workers were still out, just slower.
Around three, the food arrived.
Ayla opened the door and ran into Draven stepping out of the elevator.
So late… What was he doing, robbing banks?
Draven didn’t expect to see her either.
She was in loungewear, her hair messy, her usually sharp eyes dull from exhaustion, looking like a woman who had worked herself past her limit.
“Mr. Storm, you’re only getting back now?”
“You’re the one still awake,” Draven said coldly.

“I’m going to sleep now. Good night.” Ayla waved, closed the door, and headed back to her study.
Four monitors lit up the room, all filled with lines of code. Her eyes were starting to blur.
She planned to eat and work at the same time but changed her mind and took the food to the living room.
She couldn’t help thinking of Draven’s cold expression.
Ever since they teamed up to annoy Troy, and shared that late–night meal, their relationship felt a little
closer.
That was the only reason she spoke to him. Before, she would only nod politely.
But speaking first and asking a question at that was a bit forward. With normal friends it would have been fine, but Draven had such strong boundaries that even ordinary questions could feel like an intrusion.
Ayla finished eating, showered, washed her hair, and by the time she got into bed, it was nearly four.
After only four hours of sleep, she got up for work.
Draven had skipped the office for two days, but today he came in on time for a one–on–one meeting with the executives.
Blake asked her to bring in two coffees.
Ayla walked in and set them down. Draven glanced at her. Her face looked pale, her eyes were rimmed red, but her spirit looked intact.
