But her first reaction was to look at Draven. She worried he might be upset because of what Kaleb said. Ayla didn’t even know why she cared so much about how she looked in front of Dravenshe just did.

And by accident, she caught the small smile in his eyes.

At the same moment she looked at him, Draven also looked back.

Their eyes met without warning.

His gaze was sharp and steady. He never looked away just because someone stared at him. The one who broke eye contact first was Ayla, because she didn’t have the same confidence. She looked away like she’d been caught doing something wrong.

But she reacted fast and forced herself to look back again. Draven hadn’t moved his moment he turned his head, he ran right into her gaze again.

With all her worries bundled inside, Ayla was very good at hiding her feelings. She stayed calm and polite. Sorry, Mr. Storm.

Kaleb’s annoyed voice shot out right away. What, you think I made you lose face in front of the CEO?

I’m just shocked at how brave you are. Luckily, Mr. Storm didn’t take it to heart.” Ayla did feel embarrassed, but she wasn’t going to shame Kaleb in public. If she wanted to scold him, she’d do it laterunless he crossed a serious line.

Kaleb instantly went quiet. Then he muttered with a hint of jealousy, You make sure to praise him while you talk about me, huh?

Ayla shot back, I’m just telling the truth.”

Halle felt lucky that Kaleb wasn’t her brother. You should learn from Ayla.

But something felt wrong tonight. Actually, many things felt wrong.

Why is Draven the one who showed up?

Halle sneaked a glance at Draven. He wasn’t paying attention to her, and she didn’t dare stare too long. Draven still looked like the calm, highranked CEO he always was, so she couldn’t tell if anything was different. So she turned instead to Ayla.

The only thing that felt off was how much Ayla cared about her image in front of him. Nothing else stood out.

Am I just overthinking?

During this whole dinner, Halle couldn’t find anything truly obvious. And she had asked Ayla beforeAyla said she would never try to date Draven. Halle agreed. Draven was admirable and impressive, but he was definitely not boyfriend material.

He was too cold. The type to stay mad at someone forever.

Who would be dumb enough to suffer through that?

By the time dinner ended, Emmett was a nervous wreck, while Kaleb was furious enough he could explode.

Halle managed to leave a deeper impression on Draven about her and her company.

Ayla now owed Draven a gift, and he was clearly waiting for it.

When they were leaving, Emmett politely offered to send Draven home. He didn’t expect the guy to actually agree.

Emmett ran off excitedly to get the car. But Halle walked over suddenly. You should take me. Ayla lives closershe can take Mr. Storm.”

Emmett nodded fast. Right, that makes more sense. I didn’t think it through!

Draven accepted the arrangement with ease.

Kaleb was speechless.

This guy is so damn fake!

Halle pulled Emmett and Kaleb away first.

Draven stayed at the entrance to wait. When Ayla drove over, she stopped in front of him. Mr. Storm, you can get in.”

Draven’s tall figure walked around the front of the car and stopped by the driver’s door. He looked down at her, leaving no room for refusal. I’ll drive.”

He hadn’t drunk anything tonight.

Since he was already standing there, Ayla had no choice but to get out. After he slid into the driver’s seat, she went around to sit in the passenger seat instead.

If Draven was driving, she wasn’t going to sit in the back.

The car was parked by the main doors. As Ayla stepped around the front bumper, she suddenly saw Troy walking out of the elevator.

They were about 30 or 40 feet apart, so he might not notice her.

But somehow, he did. Out of nowhere, he looked straight at her.

Ayla didn’t expect him to react so fast. She froze when their eyes met.

From a distance, Troy’s gaze was cold and dark. When he shifted his eyes toward the car and saw who was inside, his expression dropped even more.

Draven noticed Ayla pause, so he followed her line of sight. He saw Troy’s harsh stare and his own brow tightened. His expression turned icy.

Before, Draven would’ve held backbecause Ayla was still married at the time. But now? She and Troy were divorced. So Draven didn’t bother giving Troy any respect.

Why were they both so tense, why their rivalry ran so deep?-only the two of them knew.

Troy pressed his lips together.

Then Ayla blocked his view.

She

got into the car, stepping right into the space between their lines of sight.

It only took a second or two. She never noticed how heavy the tension was between Troy and Draven.

Ayla buckled her seat belt. Draven hit the gas. As the car pulled away and turned, Ayla cast one last glance out the windowcold, sharp, and pointed straight at Troy. Her eyes held a challenge.
