Derek couldn’t hide his shock and even took a step back on instinct.

Max saw his reaction clearly and sneered, “Coward.”

He turned coldly and walked toward James.

James spotted Max. This cousin of his had been dragged here by his mom. James knew he was putting on a fake front all night and didn’t even feel like mocking him.

As soon as Max reached him, James asked, “Finally giving up and bailing?”

Max grabbed his collar and yanked him toward a nearby room.

“What are you doing? Let go-”

Max stopped. “I need to talk to you.”

Seeing the serious look on his face, James sobered up and followed him.

Once the door closed, James turned around, only to see Max smiling even more fake than before.

“Damn it, just say what you want. Don’t put on a show like some creep.”

“You know I’m friends with Troy…”

James immediately remembered Troy going crazy on the tennis court and dragging Ayla away. That guy was a full–blown egomaniac. He sneered, “Only you would be friends with that nutjob.”

Max fought the urge to strangle him. “Ayla is Troy’s ex–wife. What’s going on between her and Draven now?”

James got it. “So that’s what you dragged me in for…” He hated Troy anyway and said bluntly, “What, is Troy regretting it now? Serves him right!”

“Cut the crap.” Max had zero patience with him.

James got fired up. “Tell Troy this. Maybe someday, he’ll even have to show up and toast at their wedding.”

James felt like he’d heard the joke of the century. “Lying to you? Why would I lic? That divorced ex–husband is a piece of trash. What’s he worth now? Even if Ayla dates ten guys, he still wouldn’t make the cut.”

Max clenched his fists.

“Isn’t there a saying? Don’t be afraid the ex can’t move on; just worry whether the current guy can measure up.”

James clicked his tongue twice. “In front of Draven, Troy will always be inferior.”

Max was usually smooth–talking, but now he was suddenly at a loss for words. He couldn’t process it at all. Draven was into Ayla!

If James dared to say this, it meant Draven was definitely not treating Ayla like just anyone.

This wasn’t normal. It was beyond normal.

To the point that James could joke about it.

James noticed something was off with Max and looked at him like he was crazy. “Is it really that serious? Are you and Troy that close that you have to worry about this for him?”

There was a suffocating, unresolved pressure in Max’s chest. It wouldn’t rise or fall. It just sat there, making him miserable.

His face looked terrible.

Max always wore a charming smile. James had never seen him look this bad before. He couldn’t help reaching out to pat his shoulder.

Max slapped his hand away

James felt the sting and got annoyed too. He frowned. “What’s wrong with you today? I usually put up with your attitude… What the hell do you want?”

Max sneered. “Did Draven plan to steal Troy’s girl from the start?”

“So what if he did? So what if he didn’t? It’s none of your business. Why are you snapping at

me?”

Max felt even more suffocated. His chest tightened so badly it almost felt like a heart attack.

I knew it. Whether I was here first or not, I have no right and no standing.

I’ve planned everything–how to pursue Ayla, when to confess, how to break with Troy after that, how to protect her…

It’s barely been a week since Ayla’s divorce.

So why did everything suddenly change?

Max’s plan was like a beautiful bubble, suddenly pierced hard by reality. It popped, leaving nothing behind.

It all happened too fast–so fast that Max didn’t even feel the need to tell anyone what he’d gone through inside.

He didn’t want anyone to see through him. He even had to lie to James.

He felt that it was ridiculous.

But telling the truth would be even more ridiculous.

So Max sneered, “That guy would steal his brother’s girl, huh? James, watch out. One day, I might steal yours too. Let’s see if you’re still laughing then.”

James’s mind flashed to a scene of himself tangled up in bed with Halle. His face turned cold. “What the hell did I do to you?”

“Why so worked up?” Max shot back. “Got someone you like?”

James couldn’t stand him anymore. And he was honestly afraid Max might set his sights on him. Max was a total social butterfly. With the way he flirted with everyone, James had to be on guard.

“If I had someone I liked, I’d be married already! Get lost!”

James didn’t bother arguing anymore. He pulled the door open and left.

Max didn’t care at all about James’s gossip.
