nished

Max stood where he was, his face cold. He took a long time to steady himself.

Rather than calming down, he was forcing the surging emotions in his chest back down.

That was Max’s nature. To him, anger was something ugly. No matter who it was, once anger took over, faces twisted, and words turned sharp.

He didn’t want to become that kind of person.

Only after Max had his emotions under control did he leave the room.

Draven was drinking. Ayla stood beside him.

The feelings Max had just suppressed flared up again. He couldn’t bear to look, so he forced his

gaze away.

As he turned his eyes aside, he accidentally met Derek’s.

Derek saw him too. He instinctively tried to dodge, then felt that was too embarrassing. He shrugged and walked over. I’ve got plenty of male fans, but I’m not into this. Don’t get any ideas about me.

Max was already in a terrible mood, and now another idiot showed up. He almost laughed in anger and raised an eyebrow. Do your fans know you’re this stupid?

Derek said, What’s that supposed to mean? You can’t get your dream guy, so you take it out on me?

Max was at a loss for words. He walked to the bar, picked up a drink, and stared at Ayla in the crowd.

Half a glass went down in one gulp.

After setting the glass down, Max left without looking back.

Draven had a few drinks and was getting ready to leave.

Ayla was going with him.

Seeing this, James reached out and grabbed her wrist. Wait-

He suddenly felt a cold gaze and instinctively let go of Ayla’s hand.

Ayla looked confused.

Finished

James stared at Draven suspiciously. Wasn’t it him? He couldn’t tell what was going on, so he simply put an arm around Ayla’s shoulders and pulled her to the side, acting all buddybuddy.

Ayla, we’re friends, right?

Ayla said, Of courseThat opening sounds like you need a favor.”

So will you help me?

Yeah.Ayla remembered how James had stood up for her at the tennis court.

I knew it.James brushed back his bangs. With a handsome face like his, even a greasy move somehow just looked smooth. I’m kidding. I ran into Halle when I went out today. Funny, right? Without meaning to, we ended up neighbors.

Ayla thought of the ugly look on Halle’s face whenever she mentioned James.

I’m planning to stay in Trensea for a while. I’m a guy from up north, and I don’t really know anyone here. I don’t have many friends.

Don’t have many friends?

This whole place is packed to the brim!

When you’ve got time, come hang out with me more. Bring Halle along tooDon’t let all these people fool you. Most of them are just drinking buddies. I don’t have many I truly trust. Ayla, you’re one of them. A few more like that would be great.

Ayla said, Before you bought this place, you already drove Halle home. You knew from the start that she lived here.

James smacked his forehead. No wonder these houses looked so familiarIt was late that night, and the driver took us home. Halle gave him the address. I wasn’t paying attention.”

Ayla said, Is that so?

What else could it be?James couldn’t let Ayla see his real intentions and shot back, You’ve known me for more than a day. I’m not a bad guy. Why are you guarding against me like I’m a thief? Oh, where has this trust gone?

James’s words snapped Ayla out of it. She was being this cautious because Halle didn’t like him.

James himself wasn’t really a problem. Aside from stirring things up now and then, he was usually warm and loyal. When something happened, he really showed up.

Ayla had always hoped Halle could fit into James’s circle. Now the connections were right in

front of her. There was no real reason to refuse.

Okay. When I have time, I’ll come find you.”

m

Hehe, Ayla, I knew you were the best-Before James could finish, the hand on Ayla’s shoulder was swatted away, hard.

He turned around in shock and saw Draven’s cold expression.

Draven pressed his lips together. Done talking?

James jumped. What’s going on?

Draven’s face was blank. We’re in a hurry.

At this hour? What’s there to be in such a hurry for-

James didn’t finish, but he sensed something off.

He looked at Draven, then at Ayla, and naturally started overthinking.

He grinned obnoxiously. Alright, alright, I get it. I won’t hold you two up!

Ayla was speechless.

James even pushed Ayla to hurry along.

There really was no reason to stay anyway.

The driver had already left. Ayla hadn’t been drinking, so she drove Draven’s car and took him home.

Not far away sat Max’s car.

Max was in the back seat, staring in the direction Ayla drove off, and ordered the driver, Follow them.

Not long after, he watched Ayla drive into Westhaven.

He waited two hours. Ayla didn’t come back out.

The driver was about to fall asleep. He yawned and glanced at the rearview mirror, then froze. All night long, Max’s expression hadn’t changed once. Seeing it suddenly like that was genuinely terrifying.
