Chapter 294 Buying a Present for Ayla?
Finished
Most days, when Troy was in a bad mood, his face always turned dark and cold. His eyes grew sharp, and no one dared to cross him.
But now, his face looked pale, and Isabella noticed a weak side in him. This was the first time she had ever seen him like this.
It was clear that talking about Ayla needed careful control. She couldn’t avoid the topic, but she also couldn’t talk about it too much.
Troy was clearly in a bad mood, so Isabella chose to stay silent.
Isabella was about to leave. Her hand was already on the door when Troy suddenly said, “Wait.”
She turned around.
“Did you buy a gift for your daughter today?” Troy asked, thinking about the cartoon bag Isabella had been holding.
“Yes. I promised her I’d bring something home.” After the divorce, Isabella raised her child by herself. She had worked hard to win custody. To take care of her daughter alone, she had to keep working, and there were many things she could never fully make up for.
Troy asked, “She asked you for it?”
Isabella nodded. “She cried when she heard I was going on a business trip. I promised her a gift to calm her down.”
“How old is she?” Troy asked again.
“She’s in second grade.”
“She’s still very young,” Troy said.
Isabella remarked, “Yes. Children grow up so fast. Sometimes, when I close my eyes, it feels like she was just a baby yesterday.”
As she said this, Isabella’s eyes turned red without her meaning to.
She always set strict rules for herself at work. She never mixed her personal life with her job and rarely showed her feelings.
She blinked quickly, pushed the emotions away, and didn’t let anyone see how deeply a mother could miss her child.

Isabella didn’t understand why he had brought it up. After all, Troy didn’t have any children. with Ayla.
She looked at his pale face and gently tested him, “Mr. Winston, would you like to bring a present back?”
Before, whenever Troy traveled, he never thought about buying anything for Ayla.
This time, though, the idea crossed his mind.
The moment the thought crossed his mind, Troy felt like he had gone crazy.
All he wanted was for Ayla not to leave him. Since when had he started thinking about his past actions?
Annoyed, he snapped, “No need. Go get some rest.”
He didn’t want to think about it anymore. The truth was, he had no idea what Ayla liked.
He knew Skyla liked lilies. He had even made a necklace for her himself, spending time and effort, putting his heart into it.
“Alright, Mr. Winston. You should rest early too.”
After Isabella left, she decided on her own to find out what Ayla liked and disliked.
When it was daytime back home, she talked with Laura and Nadia. It turned out Ayla seemed to have no favorites at all.
But no one truly dislikes everything. She had just been ignored for too long. The things she loved didn’t matter, or maybe she loved Troy so much that she forgot how to care about herself.
Isabella wasn’t choosing sides. As a woman, she honestly felt that a divorce might actually be a good thing for Ayla.
Ayla worked nonstop running experiment data for her paper, staying busy until midnight.
As soon as she stood up, her shoulder hurt and her head felt dizzy. She rubbed her arm and walked out of the study. As usual, she went to the living room to pour herself a glass of water and noticed the TV was still on.
She poured a glass, drank half of it, then sank onto the couch. Her mind went blank. She could

After finishing work, Ayla always gave herself ten minutes to relax on the couch before getting up to wash and go to bed.
“Finished for tonight?”
Her eyes were closed as she enjoyed the quiet when a man’s voice suddenly broke it. She opened her eyes at once.
Draven walked over, his hair still wet, wearing loose black pajamas.
Oh right. Draven had already moved in. Her boss now lived here.
There was another living, breathing man in her home.
Even though they had separate rooms and worked on different things, living together still felt different.
Without thinking, Ayla straightened up. She dropped her lazy posture, sat properly, and switched to a serious mode.
Seeing how tired she looked, yet still forcing herself to respond, Draven frowned.
He glanced at the coffee table and saw her glass was empty.
He picked it up, filled it all the way, and handed it to her. “Drink.”
Ayla accepted it. “Thanks.” The cup was part of a matching set they had bought at the supermarket. A white mug for her and a black one for him. The black mug was sitting on the coffee table.
Now that they were living together, signs of each other were everywhere in daily life.
The pajamas had been washed and dried. Draven was wearing the matching black sleep set. He had stepped into this role very naturally.
“Drink.”
Hearing his firm voice, Ayla finally snapped out of her daze.
She took a few large gulps and almost finished the whole cup. Before she could place it on the table, he took it from her.
“You work this late every day?” Draven asked, frowning slightly.
“Sometimes. I’m processing data right now. It takes up a lot of time.”

If she kept going for two more months, the research would be finished. She could send it to a journal or wait until her professor returned and contact her first.
But processing data was slow and exhausting. She might need to ask Halle for some help.
