Troy knew Bria wasn’t stupid. Still, sometimes she could leave him speechless. “Is it really my place to step into the elders’ business?” he said.
“But we can’t count on Dad,” Bria shot back.
“That’s his problem,” Troy replied. He hadn’t even sorted out his own mess yet. There was no way he could manage anyone else’s. When Bria looked like she wanted to argue more, Troy shot her a warning look. She shut up at once.
Then, Bria suddenly noticed his hand.
She grabbed his left hand and froze when she saw the wedding band on his finger. Her eyes widened as she stared at him. “You’re getting back together with Ayla?”
Troy pulled his hand away wordlessly.
“I knew it!” Bria said at once. “There’s no way Ayla would really divorce you. See? She came back anyway.”
Thinking about the two times she had run into Ayla before, Bria felt annoyed. All that drama, and it turned out to be nothing but playing hard to get.
Where did Ayla learn these tricks? She had Troy wrapped around her finger.
Troy had wanted to explain, but this was the ending he had hoped for. So he stayed silent.
He only tightened his grip on his phone.
…
The birthday party was held at the resort.
Only close friends and relatives were invited. There were about ten tables in total.
The resort was beautiful, with plenty of activities Guests who arrived early could walk around, relax, or enjoy the facilities. After the party, they could stay and unwind. There were guest rooms upstairs for anyone who wanted to fest.
Before the party started, Troy stepped outside ad called Ayla. Once. Twice. Again. No
answer.
Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, he saw Ec and Carmen greeting guests inside.
Max, Howard, Skyla, Bria, and her friends were seated together. Even Draven, his least

A dry leaf drifted down and landed on his spotless leather shoe. Troy shifted his foot and shook it off.
Ayla not answering his calls left him feeling irritated and restless. He pressed his shoe down. and crushed the leaf under his heel.
It was a small, ordinary movement. As normal as lifting a glass to take a sip of water. But in that exact moment, his mind exploded into blank silence.
His body went stiff. His heart slammed hard in his chest. His face turned pale. Was this Ayla’s answer?
Was her absence a rejection?
Troy had never considered it before. Not even once.
He had simply assumed Ayla was with her grandmother. Once the older woman was fine, Ayla would come back.
Like a frog in warm water, he had stayed calm for too long. By the time he realized something was wrong, it was already too late to chase after her.
For a brief moment, Troy felt lost and unsure of what to do. Just then, his phone buzzed.
He looked down. It was Ayla.
It felt like grabbing a lifeline. He answered right away.
His emotions were on a roller coaster, and the anger burst out before he could stop it. “Ayla, what are you even doing to me? Can you be a little more sensible? Just come over right now!”
Ayla pulled the phone away from her ear and waited until he finished shouting. Then she brought it back. “I already told Martin. I’m with my grandmother. I’ll go over in the evening. Stop calling me all the time. It’s annoying.”
“Ayla, you-”
The call was cut off.
Troy’s breathing turned heavy.
A moment later, Ayla sent him a message.

Troy stared at those three words. After a few seconds, his racing heart finally settled. He felt much calmer.
His memory was sharp. He thought about everything Ayla had done for him over the past three years. Every detail. Every moment. He refused to believe that a woman who once loved him so deeply could completely let go in just two months.
Ayla would come back. She would remarry him. They would be together again.

After sending the message, Ayla stopped thinking about Troy. She was having lunch with Lillian. The food tasted good. The mood felt warm and steady.
Thinking about the evening, she felt a quiet sense of excitement.
She also thought of Draven. She even wanted to ask him for a small favor.
Usually, when she turned to Draven, it was because she faced problems too big to handle on her own. If she could manage something herself she wouldn’t bother him.
Deep down, Ayla didn’t want to rely on him for everything. There was no need to trouble him over something trivial.
But today, she couldn’t stop herself.
She sent Draven a message.
“Are you leaving after lunch?”
Draven didn’t expect to hear from her.
“Yes. I’m leaving with my mom.” He had come to celebrate Martin’s birthday. With the relatives all there, he wouldn’t stay long. There would be plenty of chances later to sit and chat with the old man.
Ayla already knew Draven wouldn’t stay long at such an occasion. Still, she couldn’t help herself. She typed out another message and sentit.
