Carmen slammed her hand on the table and stood up at once. “Fine. Today is Martin’s birthday, and you’re the only one who showed up late. You sure put on a big show. So that’s it -you came here to settle scores with me?” Carmen snapped. “Ayla, do you think marrying into this family is beneath you? Is that why you chose to complain about me to Martin? I never looked down on your background when you married into this family. And now you turn around and pick faults with me? Looks like you have grown too great for this house, huh?”
Troy had already rushed over.
He heard the argument before he even stepped inside.
Carmen shot him the familiar cold, strict look he knew too well. “Troy, take a good look. This is the wife you married. With so many elders here, she dares to yell at me. How can you be so stupid? Of all the women in the world, you picked one out of the trash. Now she even dares to challenge her elders!”
Troy’s face darkened in seconds.
Bria was stunned. She never expected her mother to explode like this. Carmen used to scold only Ayla. Today, she was yelling at Troy in front of the whole family.
Troy cared deeply about his pride, especially in front of their relatives.
That single outburst plunged the atmosphere in o frozen point.
The more Bria thought about how humiliated Toy looked, the angrier she became. “Ayla, this is your fault! Why did you even come? If you hadn’t shown up, our family would’ve had a peaceful day. You’re bad luck. A walking curse. Every time you appear, you make my mom angry!”
Ayla looked at Bria’s aggressive face. Then she turned to Troy, “Aren’t you going to say something?” she asked calmly.
Troy’s face was stiff and tense. He couldn’t stand Carmen either. But in his mind, if Ayla had stayed obedient like before, kept quiet and let the comments slide, things would never have blown up this badly. Deep down, he still felt she had caused the trouble. He frowned and, as always, stood against her. “Ayla, you know what kind of occasion this is. Can’t you just-
“No. I can’t.”
Ayla targeted that answer to Troy.
Then she looked at everyone in the room. She spoke slowly, clearly, one word at a time. “Just

can’t.”

Carmen never expected Ayla to keep pushing. Her anger hit its peak. “Ayla,” she snapped, “didn’t your mother ever teach you how to speak to your elders?”
Ayla’s eyes darkened in an instant, a sharp chill spilled out of them. Her hand at her side slowly curled into a fist. Her expression remained the same, as she looked straight at Carmen. “You’ve heard the saying, a kind parent raises a respectful child, right?” Ayla said calmly. “If an elder fails to do their duty-fails to show fairness, care, and proper guidance-how can they expect respect in return?
“If you want my respect, then first act like a proper elder. But you don’t. Instead, you mock me, pick at me, and shame me in public. There is no warmth at all. All you do is talk about the family background. If we really should compare backgrounds, there are plenty of families better than this family. If you care so much about status, then what—are you supposed to bow to everyone that come from more powerful family than you? That’s ridiculous. Tell me this, am I the one with no manners or you simply don’t know what manners are?”
Her tone grew heavier. “You even dragged my mother into this. Let me tell you this, look at the son you raised. He’s exactly like you-cold and selfish. As a man, he doesn’t even know how to stand up for his wife when she’s being treated unfairly. He can’t tell right from wrong. And your whole family treats him like some kind of precious prince.
“My mother never taught me to do this, but did you really raise your children well? Or are you saying Bria-who throws tantrums and causes trouble-is the successful one? Is she the child you’re proud of? If that’s your idea of good children, then the problem starts with you.
“I came here today planning to talk calmly, explain things properly. But the insults, the scolding, the ugly looks-were those meant to teach me about respecting elders? Or were they just pure malice? Only you know the answer. If I did something wrong, I will fix it, but don’t treat me like a fool.”
She swept her gaze around the room. “So many felatives are here today. If they knew how cruel this family are behind closed doors, what would they think? The family’s reputation wasn’t ruined by outsiders. You ruined it yourselves.” Ayla looked at Carmen. “No one taught me to say these things. Any normal person would lose patience with you. The only difference is that I’m done pretending. I’m done playing dumb. I’m done pleasing you. Do you
understand?”
Every word landed hard and clear. There was no fear in her voice.
Carmen turned pale with anger. Her body sway. A relative standing nearby quickly reached out to steady her.
Ayla’s words hadn’t been just a defense to Carmen scolding her-they had completely denied everything Carmen believed she had done right Troy was raised by her, his personality

Bria, on the other hand, was completely stunned Deep down, she knew she could never do what Ayla just did. She didn’t have the courage to face so many family members head-on. She only dared to settle scores in private. When she met someone stronger than her, she shrank back at once. All she knew how to do was retreat.
