So when Kayla took someone out in public, it was only someone she truly accepted as her future daughter-in-law.
She liked Ayla, yes, but Kayla also had her limits. She knew exactly where the line was.
She could like someone, but only to a point.
Kayla made sure Ayla ate well and felt comfortable. She barely paid attention to her awkward son at all. Instead, she looked at Ayla with clear satisfaction. “Ayla, last time we met, it was very brief. We were getting to know each other and leaving a good impression. I asked you both here today because I have to leave soon. Before I go, I wanted to see you again.”
Ayla nodded. “We should come visit you.”
Kayla truly liked the cool, steady way Ayla carried herself. She might complain about Draven, but even she had to admit her son was good-looking and popular among girls.
Ayla was relaxed around him. She was open and steady. Maybe she didn’t like Draven that much, but it could also be her nature. The young woman wasn’t the type to lose herself over small things.
“You’re probably not that interested in me,” Kayla teased the young couple with a smile. “You’d rather hear about Draven, right?”
Ayla knew Kayla thought they were a real couple which was why she asked. Putting the act aside, Ayla had already let Draven know part of her past. It felt fair to learn something about him too. “Ms. Kayla, you can tell me,” Ayla said.
She glanced back at Draven, then looked at Kayla again. “He never talks about himself.”
“What’s there to hide?” Kayla shot Draven a sharp look.
Draven replied calmly, “It would hurt your image.”
“What image do I even have?” Kayla snapped back.
“Your past is full of dark chapters,” Draven said.
Kayla fell silent.
Then she sighed. “I was a first-time mother. I didn’t know how to get along with you. I ended up hurting you. I’m trying to change now. You don’t have to forgive me. I just do what I believe I should do.”

Draven said nothing.
Things weren’t perfect, but he could see she had changed a little.
Otherwise, he would have cut all ties with her long ago.
Ayla looked between the two of them. “What happened?”
Kayla let out a long breath. “When he was little, the house staff bullied him. He was stubborn and never told me. I was busy and didn’t pay attention. When the staff complained to me, I didn’t ask questions. I punished him right away. That broke his heart.”
Ayla went quiet.
“Later, he stopped talking to me. I locked him in his room as punishment,” Kayla continued. “Then I forgot about it. He almost starved to death.”
Ayla froze. “What?”
“And when his cousin bullied him,” Kayla said, her voice lower, “I blamed him for being weak and beat him again. He talked back. I lost my temper and beat him; he ended up in the hospital.”
Ayla was speechless.
Kayla looked at her seriously. “Ayla, don’t be scared. I really didn’t know how to be a good mother. I didn’t give Draven enough attention of time. But he grew up straight. He knows right from wrong. You don’t need to feel any pressure about this.”
Ayla squeezed Draven’s hand to comfort him.
She hadn’t expected his life back home to be like this. What Kayla said out loud was probably already softened. The real situation had to be worse.
Draven tightened his grip on Ayla’s hand and said calmly, “I’m fine. She’s making it sound worse on purpose.”
Ayla paused. “Really?”
“Yes,” Draven replied. “Just small mistakes adults make. She’s trying to make me look pitiful. Don’t overthink it.”
After reassuring Ayla, Draven turned to Kayla with a displeased look. “So what are you really trying to say?”
Kayla hid her surprise. She had put things lightly and skipped over the worst parts. Draven saying this casually didn’t mean he didn’t care. If he truly didn’t resent her, he wouldn’t

Kayla pretended not to notice and followed his lead. “I feel guilty toward you. I don’t come to Trensea often, so I wanted to spend more time with you both. That’s why I made it sound so miserable.”
Ayla finally relaxed a little.
Watching how the mother and son interacted helped her understand Draven’s past better.
Kayla continued, “Why don’t you two stay here tonight? Tomorrow morning, we can have breakfast together as a family. After that, I’ll head out.”
Ayla froze. “Huh?”
“Ayla, I don’t get many chances to spend time with you,” Kayla said gently. “You know Draven doesn’t like dealing with me. I’m leaving early tomorrow. If you’re here, he’ll at least talk to me.”
Ayla hesitated for a second. “All right. We’ll stay. Ms. Kayla, don’t be sad.”
Kayla had said those words partly to play along with Draven’s demand. When she heard Ayla’s sincere response, she paused for a beat. What she said was half true. Ayla’s concern, though, was completely genuine. For a brief moment, Kayla felt a hint of guilt. But she wasn’t the type to dwell on things like that. As long as she got what she wanted, it was enough.
She quickly snapped out of it and smiled. “That’s wonderful, Ayla. Stay the night here. I’ll have everything prepared so you can be comfortable.”
Ayla smiled back. “Thank you for the trouble.”
“It’s no trouble at all,” Kayla said warmly. “Just call me Kayla. No more Ms. Kayla; it sounds too cold.”
