Ayla worked with extreme care-so focused it was almost intense, like she was studying lab results instead of treating a wound.
Draven wanted to talk, but it felt wrong to interrupt her.
So he stayed quiet and looked at her openly.
When his eyes weren’t resting on her calm, pretty face, they drifted to her neck-long and clean, made more noticeable by the way she kept her head lowered.
Once she finished treating his hand, Ayla lifted her head and met his gaze. This time, she didn’t panic like she used to. She treated it like any normal moment. “You’ve got a cut on your ear too.”
He hadn’t even noticed. “Is it bad?”
She smiled faintly. “If you didn’t feel it, then no. Just a couple red marks.”
She picked up a cotton swab and leaned in to clean his ear, tilting her head up slightly.
They were very close now. Her eyes naturally settled on his ear. She’d never really had a chance to look before-normally, this kind of close inspection wouldn’t fit their relationship. Staring too long would feel rude.
But looking now, she realized something. Good-looking people really were put together everywhere. Even his ear had clean lines.
There was a scratch behind it too.
Maybe from a fingernail. Or maybe from when they grabbed whatever they could and threw things at each other in the hotel room.
To reach behind his ear, Ayla had to lean in even closer.
Her chin was almost resting on his shoulder.
She finally broke the silence. “Did you see Noah
Draven treasured moments like this-when she was close. Without meaning to, his mind jumped back to the helicopter. The way she’d clung to his neck, curled against him, kissing him. His chest heated instantly. Then that name-Noah-hit him like cold water, snapping
him awake.
He looked down at his freshly wrapped hand. His voice stayed low and steady. “I did.”

“He’s not badly hurt, right?”
“He’ll survive.”
She frowned. “What does ‘he’ll survive’ mean?”
“You care about him that much, huh?”
By the time the words left his mouth, Draven had already turned to look at her.
The distance between them widened slightly.

Ayla turned too. Their eyes met. His face was handsome as always-but there was no warmth in it. He didn’t smile often to begin with, but this was different.
This wasn’t calm. This was cold.
Ayla could read the look in his eyes now. She understood what he was feeling.
“I only met Noah tonight,” she said. “He works in finance. Young, successful, and good- looking. And single. After we talked about work, guess what he said to me?”
Draven clearly didn’t want to guess.
“He said he wanted to pursue me.”
His face darkened again. “And you’re interested in him?”
“He’s impressive,” Ayla said calmly. “It’s not even about whether I’m good enough to judge him. I just didn’t feel anything, so I turned him down.”
As she spoke, she noticed how tight his jaw was. Mr. Storm, why are you so tense?”
Draven frowned. Since when did she get this sharp? She could even tell he was upset now,
Ayla smiled. “Do you really think I’d get involved with him? Don’t forget-we still have that two-year agreement. We’re supposed to pretend to be a couple. You can’t see other women, and I can’t date other men.”
He asked coldly, almost sharply, “So you rejected him only because of the agreement? Do you regret it?”
“I already said I didn’t feel anything.”
“What if you meet someone you do feel something for?” he pressed. “Would you be with
him?”

She smiled lightly. “Rules exist.”
His expression almost cracked, “And if there were no rules?”
She thought for a moment, seriously. “Then maybe I’d find a loophole.”
Draven frowned deeply, staring at her innocent face reflected in his eyes.

He suddenly realized something dangerous. She was actually making him angry. Not a little angry-he was close to losing control.
But he had no right to show it. He was the one who liked her. Unilaterally. Who she liked had nothing to do with him, and she owed him nothing.
Still-she could think about liking other men. Had she ever thought about him? Was he not good enough? What exactly was wrong with him
It had been a long time since Ayla had seen him show displeasure toward her. Even now, compared to how cold he could be with others, his expression was almost gentle.
She changed the subject. “Why did you come to Aqualith?”
“Business,” he said. In truth, he wanted to see her sooner.
“So Shawn called you, and that’s how you knew Troy was bothering me?”
“Yes.” In truth, he’d been watching Troy the whole time.
Shawn had been out partying and realized too late what was happening.
Ayla sighed. “Then I really should thank him. If not for him, tonight could’ve gone much worse for me.”
That was when Draven finally couldn’t hold back anymore. His eyes darkened as he fixed them on her.
