Chapter 446 Holding Him Steady
Ayla thought to herself that keeping Troy steady really as the best approach.
Not only did he refuse to accept reality, but he was also indulging in wild fantasies.

Ayla, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Stay away from Drave. He’s not as good as he looks. He’s very good at pretending. Ever since he was a kid, he’s acted especially well–behaved and sensible to draw adults‘ attention. Who knows what he’s really thinking?” Troy said. “Don’t let him fool you. Be careful. His feelings might all be an act, while I want to keep living life with you. I’m not lying to you.”
Of course. Troy never bothered to sugarcoat his thoughts, even the ugly ones. He just said whatever.
Draven’s feelings, on the other hand, were cautious and restrained, as if he was scared to spook her. He hid his affection for so long, even keeping his love for her buried until she finally understood it herself.
Ayla liked the directness. She also liked that careful gentleness.
Troy only had Max by his side when he was sick. There was no one left who cared about his comfort, no one who could hold his hand and check on him. He desperately wanted to be close to Ayla. “You can’t leave until you kiss me.”
Ayla said, “You don’t get to make demands. Stop daydreaming.”
Troy stared hard at her, weighing the consequences of forcing her. He realized he was afraid. He’d finally gotten to a place where he could still talk to her–if he pushed now, it might blow up and never end well.
Damn it. Am I not even allowed to hold her anymore?
Troy suppressed that urge. “How long do you need to calm down before you come looking for me?”
Ayla said, “I’m not making you any promises.”
She wasn’t trash. She wouldn’t give him false hope or deliberately toy with Troy’s feelings.
She needed to patiently wait for Troy to accept reality. Then, without spending any effort at all, she could finally say goodbye to him completely.
Troy’s face darkened. “So I’ll have to wait a long time?”
Ayla played along. “Have some patience.”
After saying that, Ayla really was about to leave.
Troy watched her walk toward the door, unknowingly clenching his fist. Suddenly, unable to help himself, he called her name. “Ayla.”
Ayla placed her hand on the doorknob and turned back
Troy stood up, his gaze fixed on her. “Don’t make me wait too long.”
That look burned Ayla slightly.
Why is he looking at me with eyes that seem so deeply affectionate?
Does he even know what he’s doing? To be honest, when a scumbag puts on an act of devotion like this, anyone without a

But Ayla felt nothing at all.

If only he had been like this before. But she knew this man’s rotten nature far too well. He could never give her any hope.
She had been hurt by him once. She wouldn’t turn back again. No matter how much Troy changed, she couldn’t take it.
Even if there were any future left between them, she would live every day in fear because of past shadows. The moment Troy accidentally showed his old self, she would relive that pain all over again. That kind of life was torture. Only a fool would go back.
Her life now had Draven in it. After experiencing something good, she finally understood how bad the past had been. Troy didn’t have the ability to love someone, so none of what he was doing could move her.
Ayla didn’t respond. She only gave him a casual glance, pulled the door open, and walked out.
Troy stood there, his heart pounding wildly.
That look from Ayla left him deeply unsettled. He wanted desperately to grab her and pull her back.
Damn it!
Why does Ayla always leave me with one cold, rejecting back view after another?
The hand hanging at his side clenched even tighter.
Not long after, Isabella entered alone.
She studied Troy’s expression. It wasn’t as bad as she’d imagined, but it wasn’t good either. It was only slightly better than it had been in Aqualith.
“Mr. Winston.”
Only then did Troy come back to his senses when he heard Isabella’s voice. Ayla’s rejecting back was still stabbing at him. His chest felt tight. He wanted to vent, but he wouldn’t talk about this with Isabella.
Isabella’s hesitant expression irritated him. “What is it?”
After hesitating, Isabella said, “Mr. Winston, I feel like Ayla isn’t the same as before.”
“More than just different. She slapped me.”
Isabella was stunned. She immediately noticed the clear handprint on Troy’s cheek, her shock deepening.
