Chapter 540 Inviting Humiliation
“You showed up at the party uninvited?” James let out a cold laugh. “Sounds more like a provocation.” He looked at Troy with open dislike. “Max, you’re not welcome here. Take Troy and leave.”
Max tilted his head slightly and smiled. “Oh, I forgot to mention. I’m not the one here to give blessings. It’s Mr. Storm’s younger brother, personally.”
He added with a light smile, “Mr. Storm himself didn’t object.”
Troy, Max, and Isabella stopped a few feet away from them.
Max narrowed his eyes at James. “What nonsense are you talking about?”
Normally, Max was the peacemaker. He avoided conflict. Even though he and James didn’t get along, it was usually kept private. He cared about keeping things polite on the surface. But once those words came out, the air instantly felt heavier.
Max had stopped pretending. Troy definitely wasn’t here to celebrate his half–brother’s birthday.
Ayla had planned a relaxed birthday party for Draven. But once Troy showed up, “relaxed” was no longer possible.
After divorce, many women were harassed by their ex–husbands. Ayla wasn’t the only one. She had support. She wasn’t someone who could be crushed and left helpless. Still, the pressure made it hard to
breathe.
Anger exploded inside her chest.
Once you meet a jerk, there is no such thing as a peaceful goodbye.
Ayla kept running. Troy kept chasing. It felt like an unfair race where only one person decided to start.
How could she end this ridiculous farce that Troy started alone?
She couldn’t keep running.
She had to stop and face him.
“Max, are you here to start trouble?” James said, feeling the tension in the air. “Today is Draven’s birthday. You’re not welcome here. Just leave.”
Honestly, since knowing Draven, James had rarely seen a situation like this.
And everyone present knew the relationship between Draven, Troy, and Ayla.
If the three of them appeared in the same place, it was like a disaster waiting to happen. No one would feel comfortable. If people could avoid it, they would.
Max was smart. Of course he knew that.
Yet he still brought Troy here. And he was clearly siding with him when he spoke.
Was Troy out of his mind? And Max didn’t even try to stop him? Why was Max joining him in this mess?
James definitely didn’t have a cousin this clueless.
James stood up, ready to throw them out.
Then Draven suddenly said, “James, you guys go get some rest.”
His tone was light, almost casual. But no one dared ignore him.
No matter how close friends were, they had no right to interfere in conflicts between blood brothers. Only the people involved could settle it..
Everyone there understood. If they stayed, they would only end up watching the two sides clash head–on. It would be awkward for everyone. Even if Draven hadn’t spoken, James and the others would have left
anyway.
Halle had seen Troy before. He looked a little like Draven. Similar face shape. Similar build. From the outside, he looked decent enough. But inside? Completely rotten.
Troy’s miserable look actually pleased Halle.
She knew exactly how badly Troy had hurt Ayla. After the divorce, Ayla slowly got better. She focused on her career. Her life kept improving. She even met someone new. Just when Ayla had finally started taking care of herself again, her ex–husband showed up to cause trouble.
So annoying.
Still, with everyone here today, Halle wasn’t worried.
She patted Ayla’s shoulder to comfort her. Then she looked at Troy and casually sang two teasing lines in local slang and sang a song with lyrics that were meant to mock Troy.
Shawn and Winnie both understood.
The mockery was perfect. Classic Halle.
She went straight to the heart.
Shawn liked it. He gave a dark, playful smile and joined in the singing with his mellow voice.
