Chapter 630 A Quiet Talk in the Hallway

Fluffy and Birdie had been adorable from the very start. Even as newborns, they were strikingly cute. Anyone who saw the twins instantly liked them. Martin loved them, and so did Troy’s parents. It was almost impossible not to adore newborn twins.
While everyone crowded around the babies, Ayla stood off to the side.
Without realizing it, she thought of Juliana. If her mother were here, she would have been thrilled to see the twins.
The thought made Ayla’s chest tighten. A quiet sadness crept into her heart, mixed with a deep sense of regret.
Her children had a mother, but she didn’t.
Most new mothers learned how to care for a baby from their mothers. Ayla, however, had to figure everything out on her own. No one here truly understood the emptiness she felt. In this world, the one person who understood her best was still her younger brother.
Ayla kept all of these thoughts buried inside. She said nothing.
What she didn’t expect was for Eric, who had barely spoken to her during her three years of marriage, to walk over.
“Let’s step outside and talk,” Eric said gently.
In Troy’s eyes, Eric had always been a soft and somewhat indecisive man. He lacked the strong ambition needed in business, which was one reason Troy had been able to take over the company so quickly.
Still, when Eric was younger, his good looks had easily won Kayla over. Even now, though he was older, he still carried himself with quiet charm. He had grown old now but was still attractive. Eric had two sons and a daughter, and all of them had inherited his good looks. Each of them stood out in their own way.
Ayla had some free time, so she followed Eric into the hallway.
Eric spoke first. “Ayla, now that you and Troy have children, you’re both parents. Have you thought about how you’ll raise them?”
“We’ll do it together,” Ayla answered.
Eric hesitated before asking, “Does that mean you and Troy will still live separately?”
Ayla understood immediately. Eric was trying to make peace between them. “There’s no future for Troy and me,” she said calmly. “Not in this lifetime.”
Eric could see the firmness in her eyes. After a brief pause, he asked quietly, “Is it because of Draven?”
Ayla and Draven had been together for almost a year. They had never made a public announcement, but the family knew about it one way or another. And who was the one to spread the news? It was probably Bria. Still, Ayla had no intention of hiding it. She had freedom to date whoever she wanted.

Ayla looked at Eric and replied in a calm, steady voice. “It has nothing to do with anyone else. It’s just my decision. I don’t want to get remarried. There’s no deeper reason–I simply don’t want to.”
Eric let out a quiet sigh, regret showing clearly on his face. “I’m sorry. Marrying Troy must have been very hard for you. As the elders, we didn’t do a good job taking care of you. For that, I truly owe you an apology.”
Ayla gently shook her head. “Mr. Winston, you don’t need to say that. It doesn’t change anything now. Why did you want to meet with me? If you’re here to persuade me to remarry Troy, then my answer is still the
same.”
Eric looked into Ayla’s clear, steady eyes. For a moment, he felt a trace of shame and couldn’t quite hold her gaze. Still, he spoke honestly. “You probably know that Troy and Draven have never gotten along. That’s my fault. When they were young, it was my fault; I hadn’t done enough to guide them. Now I regret it, but it’s too late.” He paused for a moment. “When I look at the children you and Troy share, I can’t help worrying about how they’ll grow up. If you two remarried, the twins would have both parents together. That would be better for them. Floyd and Esme may be sensitive if you and Troy start new families and have more kids.”
Ayla understood his concern. She stayed quiet for a few seconds before answering seriously, “Mr. Winston, when Troy first set things up the way he did, I had considered leaving the children behind. But I know what Troy’s childhood was like. I wouldn’t feel confident about the twins‘ upbringing if he raised them alone. Because of this, I decided to stay in their lives. Floyd and Esme are my children. As long as I’m here, they won’t stray.”
Just like Kaleb. After Juliana’s accident, he had shut himself away for a time. His temper had become much worse too. But if Kaleb were given enough time, he would grow up just fine. Both Ayla and Kaleb had been raised by their mothers. Their foundation was already solid.
Ayla would also teach Floyd and Esme to care for and support each other. One day, they would be the closest people in each other’s lives. They would grow up together and stay by each other’s side for many years. Longer even than their parents could.
After listening to Ayla, Eric knew there was no point in trying to persuade her any further. She was far stronger than he had imagined–steady, responsible, and clear about her choices.
Someone from the younger generation who had grown into a person like this didn’t need advice from the elders. Eric was curious about what had happened between Ayla and Draven, but he chose not to ask. He didn’t want to irritate her.
