Chapter 646 Unexpected Protection

Most of the time, Ayla was strong. But Draven had been lucky. He had happened to find the one moment when her strength faltered, and he had slipped in through that small crack.

When Kayla fell silent, Ayla spoke softly. “Thank you.”

Ayla knew she had been fortunate in life. Many of the elders she had met treated younger people with patience and care. Maybe people who had seen more of the world simply had bigger hearts and more understanding.

Kayla smiled. When she smiled, her beautiful face became even more striking. “But young people should be given a chance,” she said calmly. “I came here because of this.”

Ayla blinked, confused. The comment didn’t seem to connect with the earlier conversation. She was about to ask what Kayla meant, but Kayla didn’t explain. Instead, Kayla looked into her eyes. “What lovely eyes,” Kayla said slowly. “So cool and clear. I really like them.”

Her thoughts drifted far into the past. When Kayla was young, someone had once tried to assassinate her. She had brushed against death many times. During one of those moments, someone had saved her life. But when she woke up later, she remembered only one thing. A pair of calm, distant eyes. She had never seen the person’s face. Afterward, she used every connection and resource she had to search for them, but she never found any trace.

The people who wanted her dead had wiped away every clue. In the end, the one who saved her simply disappeared from her life.

Ayla’s eyes reminded Kayla of the unknown person who had once saved her life. Kayla had never learned hat person’s name, but she always thought of them as an old acquaintance. Deep down, she believed that if they had truly met, they would have understood each other right away. Even now, Kayla sometimes dreamed of that moment. In the dream, she was lying in a pool of blood, barely conscious. The only thing she could see was that pair of calm eyes. Those eyes seemed to encourage her, telling her to stay strong and not give up.

At that point in her life, when she was close to death, it was one of the rare moments when Kayla had wanted to rely on someone. And that someone was a stranger whose face she had never even seen.

The first time Kayla met Ayla, she felt a strange sense of familiarity. But Ayla looked far too young, so Kayla never connected her with the person who had once saved her.

After that, Ayla simply walked with Kayla around the garden. Before long, they ran into Eric, who had come looking for them.

Eric froze. “Draven?”

His face showed clear disbelief, as if he couldn’t imagine Kayla acting like a caring mother.

“What about him?” Eric asked.

Kayla was a little surprised. It seemed Eric had grown older but not any wiser. She had no interest in explaining things to him. “Your son doesn’t like me very much,” she said calmly. “You should spend more time with him. Show him some concern.”

From the carlier marriage arrangement, Kayla had already learned what Draven thought about her and about the Storms. And his opinion of his mother could not have been worse. It was a terrible review. Kayla was embarrassed because of it, so now she wanted to fix her reputation a little.

Eric had no choice but to cooperate. “Alright,” he said quietly.

When Ayla returned to the living room, Carmen–who had never been friendly toward her–actually came over and asked, “What did she say to you?”

“We just walked around and looked at the flowers,” Ayla answered.

“The flowers?” Carmen frowned. “She’s not someone who spends time doing things like that.” Her eyes stayed fixed on Ayla, clearly upset. “Do you like her?”

Ayla could hear the jealousy hidden in Carmen’s voice. Kayla had a strong presence. She was sharp, confident, and impossible to ignore. Deep down, her presence had always bothered Carmen. It was like a thorn stuck in her heart–painful and impossible to pull out. Kayla’s strength made comparisons unavoidable. First it was their sons. Now even Ayla’s attitude toward the two women seemed to invite comparison.

“We just spoke politely,” Ayla said calmly. “I don’t interact with Ms. Storm very often.”

Carmen knew Ayla wasn’t being completely honest, but there was nothing she could do about it. After a short pause, she said, “If you ever need help, I can take care of the kids for you. Young people don’t always know how to raise kids properly.”

“Thank you for the offer,” Ayla replied coolly. “But I’d rather Floyd and Esme not grow up to be another Troy and go around hurting people.”

Carmen’s expression turned ugly at once. “So you think you run this family because you have children

now?”

Ayla was just about to argue back when Kayla walked in from the garden. She glanced briefly at Carmen and said in a light tone, “Don’t argue with young people. Sometimes kids raised by young parents turn out just fine–maybe even better than those raised by people our age. Let the younger generation handle things in their own way.”

Kayla simply reached out and slipped an arm around Ayla’s shoulders. “I see Ayla as my daughter now,” she said easily. “It’s perfectly reasonable to spoil my daughter.”
