As she spoke, Kayla looked out the window. “He said everything I brought into his life only caused him pain. When I first heard that, I was furious and didn’t take it seriously. But the more I thought about it later, the more I felt… maybe I really do owe him something. She paused for a moment. “So if there’s something I can make up for, I’ll try.”

Kayla knew she had never been a good mother. Even now, she probably still wasn’t. But her desire to soften the frozen distance between her and her son was real.
