Ayla said, Yeah.

Max asked, So why are you playing tennis today?

She thought of James dragging her into this, but she also wanted a change, so she said, I want to try something new.

Max said, That’s good. I hope you keep this energy.

Ayla nodded slightly.

They sat by the window to get some sun, and a Cullinan rolled past outside at that moment.

Skyla froze and said, “Is that Max and Ayla?

Troy turned to look right away.

Max leaned back with a relaxed posture, and his eyes stayed locked on Ayla. He watched her with that easy smile and talked like nothing could bother him.

Ayla looked calm while she listened and replied now and then.

Troy’s brows tightened because he had no idea when they became that familiar.

Max knew her better than the others did, but they never talked this smoothly before. None of it felt like casual small talk.

Troy kept his face flat, and he did not bother to ask.

Skyla relaxed when she saw he did not care, but her chest still twisted in

anger.

She hated that Max knew Troy disliked Ayla and still chose to talk to her anyway.

To her, it felt like Max slapped both of them right on the spot.

She even wondered if Ayla contacted Max first.

It was possible.

She decided Ayla had become pathetic and only knew how to hang around men.

Skyla held her disgust back and said, Maybe Ayla needed something from Max.

Troy pulled his eyes away and said, “Maybe.

Skyla said, I’ll call Max and tell him to come to the court.

Max had finally broken the distance between him and Ayla, and he actually enjoyed talking for

once.

Then his phone rang and cut straight through the moment. He answered, What is it?

Skyla said, We’re already at the court.”

Max frowned and said, I never asked you to come.”

He remembered only complaining last night about James asking him to play, but he never invited anyone.

Skyla said, You mentioned it, and I realized I haven’t played in a while. I called Troy, and Rolf is coming too.”

Max sighed and said, Fine. Wait for me there.

He hung up, and Ayla said, Since your friends are there, you should go.”

Max wanted to curse out loud, but manners forced him to hold it in. His body stayed tense, but his voice stayed calm when he asked, Can we talk like this again next time?

Ayla said, I don’t think that’s necessary.

She and Max were not close enough to meet casually, and his circle included Troy, so she would not throw herself into that mess.

She had plenty of friends already and did not need Max.

Max had deep eyes that made him look painfully sincere when he focused.

He looked at her and said, We never talked properly before. Now I see you’re great, and we get along. Even after you divorce Troy, it changes nothing. I still want us to talk more.

His tone stayed warm, and it felt like he meant every word.

Ayla did not want to reject him harshly, so she gave him the polite answer adults always used. She said, We’ll see if there’s a chance.

She barely had time for anything because of work and her thesis.

Giving a soft answer felt harmless.

That was how adults handled people.

Max said, Alright, I’m heading out.He looked relieved that she did not shut him down completely, and his smile showed it. He stood up and left.

Silence followed.

Ayla watched him walk away and thought Max looked pretty handsome when he smiled.

Troy had already booked the court for the group.

When Max walked in, Skyla shot him a cold look that screamed annoyance.

Max ignored her attitude and sat on the bench. He glanced at Troy and thought about everything he planned.

He knew he would eventually break away from Troy and end their friendship, but this wasn’t the moment to start a fight.

He would wait until Ayla got her divorce

papers.

Even now, Max still liked playing with Troy more than playing with James.

He just did not expect Troy to glare at him with sharp suspicion. Troy demanded, What did you talk to Ayla about?

Max blinked. How did you even know?

Troy said, We drove by.

Skyla leaned forward and asked, Max, do you talk to just anyone now?

Max understood why she acted that way, but he kept quiet.

He looked at her and said, Skyla, you’re the one who matters most, so don’t get jealous.

Skyla ignored him.

Max turned back to Troy and said, “Why do you suddenly care about her?

Troy said, Answer my question.

Max said, We ran into each other, so I asked about her work at Storm Group.”

Ayla had told him she was only a junior assistant in the secretary office. She said the chief secretary arranged the job for her.
