Troy listened with clear boredom. His tone turned sharp and cold. He said, “I already told her to resign.”
He acted like the idea of Ayla refusing didn’t exist. He never imagined she would push back.
Troy never loved Ayla. He also never respected her.
He never cared about her thoughts.
A small crease hit his brow.
The old Ayla would have followed his orders right away.
But the Ayla standing in front of them now was not the same woman.
Max had seen the change too. After she made up her mind about the divorce, she shifted.
Her whole presence changed.
She looked brighter now that she no longer treated Troy like he was the center of her world.
Max felt his heartbeat shoot up.
He pressed his hand to his chest and tried to calm himself. He told himself he was too old to react like a teenager.
The rush still hit him anyway. His nerves shook with excitement.
Skyla said, “Why did you stop talking?”
Max said, “If you want to know, go ask her.” He let out a slow breath. He added, “You always act like you’re above that sort of talk.”
He knew Skyla. She had high standards because she was a brilliant woman. She always looked down on Ayla.
He also knew arguing with her was useless. Sometimes keeping the peace was easier.
Skyla hated hearing that tone from him. Max still looked relaxed, which made her irritation feel stupid.
She forced it down and said, “Just remember who your actual friends are.”
Then she stopped talking to Max.

Max said, “Of course. You two are my closest friends.”
Troy shot him a cold warning. “Stop acting weird.”
Max let out a quick, annoyed click of his tongue. He said, “I didn’t even pick a fight with Skyla. You need to relax. I can’t even joke now?”
Troy stayed silent. That silence was an answer.
He never let anything slide when Skyla was involved.
Max lifted his hands. He said, “Fine. I quit. Ayla didn’t tell me anything special. I don’t know if she plans to quit. If you want the truth, go ask her.”
Troy frowned for a second, then dismissed it.
He still believed Ayla would never disobey him.
Whenever they argued and he refused to come home, Ayla ran to Laura first. If Laura had nothing, Ayla went to Max to ask about him.
So if she came today, he assumed she was here to apologize.
In his mind, Ayla was lucky she had not crossed every line. She knew Draven was off limits. She would never touch that landmine.
Troy’s face darkened.
He already decided that even an apology would not fix anything this time.
The court was open to the outside. Troy had just finished thinking when he saw Ayla walking toward the courts.
She wore a fitted white tennis outfit. She was tall with long, straight legs. The simple white look made her seem fresh and young.
He assumed she came to say sorry. Maybe she thought she could play tennis with him too.
He frowned at her boldness. He thought her confidence was ridiculous.
Skyla saw her next. She frowned, then ignored her.
Laura once said Ayla had no hobbies except cooking. She said Ayla was boring and dull.
Tennis was not easy.

You needed twenty to thirty lessons to learn the basics. Real skill took months.
Skyla hated the sun. She hardly practiced. Her skill level was barely entry level.

Ayla had zero experience. Yet she walked over dressed like she was ready to join them. Did she want Troy to teach her?
Skyla thought Ayla had no self–respect. She thought Ayla would embarrass herself once Troy turned her down.
Skyla stopped thinking about it. She started swinging again. Her posture looked rusty because she had not practiced in a long time.
Troy walked to her side. He placed his hand over hers to guide her grip and corrected her motions. He coached her with patience.
Ayla kept walking near the fence line.
She had no idea Troy would be here because Max never mentioned him.
Seeing him did not surprise her, however.
She glanced at the court and saw Troy leaning close to guide Skyla’s hands. Their bodies almost overlapped. They looked intimate.
She stared for two seconds, then looked away.
Max called, “Ayla.”
Ayla nodded at him.
Troy frowned at Max. He said, “Tell her to wait. She can come later.”
He did not want to hear her apology.
Seeing her anywhere near him annoyed him.
Max opened his mouth to speak, but Ayla had already walked
She never intended to stop.
Skyla noticed it and said, “Ayla still listens to you.”
Troy said, “Yeah,” with no emotion at all.

Ayla had always obeyed him. No matter how she acted or how much she changed, Troy believed the end result stayed the same. He believed she would always come back.
