Kaleb said, “Sounds good.”

Emmett asked, “What about you?” Then he added, “It’s gotta be something related to Bria, right?”

Andrew and Renee both watched Kaleb with curious eyes, waiting to see what he’d say.

They didn’t really hang out with Kaleb much and didn’t know him all that well. Besides, Kaleb was the guy with the guts to throw down with Troy, and from day one he’d never backed down to Bria. He had this serious magnetism about him, and combined with how little they knew him, Kaleb was kind of a mystery.

So Andrew and Renee were even more curious about Kaleb, expecting him to come out with some really high-minded wish.

Kaleb said simply, “I just want everyone I care about to be safe and healthy.”

Andrew waited for him to keep going, but Kaleb stopped right there. Andrew was completely thrown. “That’s it?”

Renee was a little surprised too. “It’s simple, but it’s a really beautiful wish.”

Andrew clicked his tongue. “Okay, now my wish sounds super cringe. It’s like we’re not even on the same level.”

Bria shot back, “Oh, you noticed that too?”

Andrew said sourly, “Don’t forget I’m your friend. Quit kicking me while I’m down.”

“I’m just telling the truth.” Bria genuinely loved that grounded quality about Kaleb, the took life seriously and stayed steady. He was the perfect boyfriend material and perfect husband material too.

When Kaleb heard Bria stand up for him, he was obviously thrilled. Under the table, he did something out of character and reached for her hand, holding it in his and softly stroking her palm. It wasn’t anything teasing, just a small, intimate moment between two people who were dating.

Bria turned her head and met Kaleb’s eyes. Andrew couldn’t even watch. “Okay, that’s enough. Do you have to be all over each other in front of us? You’re killing my appetite.”

For once, Emmett actually agreed with Andrew. “Same here. I haven’t even eaten yet.”

Bria clicked her tongue and suddenly looked a little bashful, but she went ahead and said it. “My wish is for Kaleb to actually keep me in line. Like, really be able to rein me in.”

Just like she’d said, nobody saw that coming, not even Kaleb.

Once it sank in, Andrew started groaning nonstop. “No way. No way. Is this still the Bria I know? When did you turn into this person? Bria, are you seriously telling me dating someone has changed your whole personality?”

Renee was floored too. “Bria, you actually want someone telling you what to do?”

Emmett just had to give it to his buddy. Bria’s temper was a beast, the kind that would chew up anyone who tried to handle her. But not only had his buddy actually landed her, Bria was now actively asking to be reined in. Was this the magic of love?

Andrew couldn’t take it. “Bria, I officially don’t know who you are anymore.”

Kaleb waited for Bria to explain.

Bria said, “What’s there to not know about? I’m always getting myself into trouble and pissing people off, and Kaleb’s whole personality is the opposite of mine. He’s solid. So if I’m about to start something, he can pull me back. What’s so weird about that?”

She glared at Kaleb. “Right?”

Kaleb said, “Right.”

“But that’s only if you can actually pull me back. I might totally ignore you, and then we’ll have a screaming match.”

Kaleb wasn’t the least bit fazed. “Don’t worry, I’ll just rat on you to your brother.”

Bria said, “I told you, you’re not allowed to use that move!”

“It’s the easiest move and the most effective one.”

Bria pulled her hand away from Kaleb’s. “I don’t like being told what to do. You can’t boss me around.”

Kaleb went to grab her hand back, but Bria refused to give it.

Kaleb saw the challenge in her eyes. He narrowed his own eyes a little, then put an arm around her shoulder and leaned in close. Bria’s left shoulder shifted forward, and his right arm slid behind her back. They were angled just enough to be pressed together, almost like he was holding her halfway in his arms.

While he had his arm around her, Kaleb went ahead and put more food on her plate, then turned to look at her. “Don’t worry. I’ll handle it on a case-by-case basis.”

The second those words came out, Andrew and Emmett looked ready to flip the table and walk

out.

Renee just had the look of someone who’d been hit by something unbelievably sweet.
