The second Kaleb arrived and got into her car, Bria threw herself into his arms, cupped his face, and kissed him hard.
Even after that, she still wasn't satisfied. "Take me home."
Kaleb looked at her and let out a low sound of acknowledgment.
While Bria and Kaleb were sneaking off together, Halle wasn't alone either.
She'd been blocked in on the road.
Halle stared at the Rolls-Royce that had nearly rear-ended her trying to chase her down, and the only thought running through her head was... Not again. James—that clingy lunatic who won't leave me alone.
She didn't bother getting out, just sat there in her car, curious to see what kind of stunt James was going to pull this time.
Halle knew exactly what James wanted from her. After they'd accidentally slept together one time, the rich heir had wanted to keep things going in a casual way.
There was no real feeling involved, since the two of them had barely interacted.
The reason James couldn't let it go was probably just male ego—that whole conquest thing.
He was interested in her and wanted to win her over.
Halle was only into the obedient, younger-guy type. James was hot and came from a great family, and at this point they were familiar with each other, but she just couldn't force herself to be into someone who wasn't her type. If you weren't into someone, you weren't into them.
Halle wasn't going to force herself to do things she didn't want to do or accept people she didn't like.
She wasn't as reckless as Bria, but within the limits of what she could handle, within the space where she could still clean up her own mess, she always chose to live the way she wanted.
Which was exactly why Halle rarely made mistakes and got to live exactly the way she wanted. She was downright thriving.
James was a problem who never should've been in her life.
Halle gripped the steering wheel and gave it a few light pats.
Pretty soon, James climbed out of his car.
She might not have liked him, but she had to admit, his type radiated this constant, blinding kind of charm. The glow coming off him was impossible to dim. He could just take a few steps and somehow look effortlessly stylish, drawing every eye in the room.
When people ran into a guy that good-looking, most of them didn't even dare to approach him, much less make eye contact.
Halle and James were familiar enough, though, so she just watched him walk up to her car.
"Come on, do me a favor. If you really can't stand the thought of being stuck with just me, I'll bring some other people along too. Just a normal social thing. No pressure, alright?" James flashed a warm, easy smile, completely upfront about it.
It was hard to say no to someone smiling at you like that. With him putting it that way, Halle couldn't refuse. "How could I feel pressured? You're being too polite, Mr. Reagen."
"Then I'll just hop right into your car." James was visibly thrilled, like a puppy who'd just been offered a treat.
You couldn't tell unless you really looked, but in that moment, Halle was certain James was here for her. If she turned him down today, he'd just keep pestering her later, so she might as well lay it all out right now.
"Sure, but I need to give my fiancé a heads-up. Mr. Reagen, mind giving me a few minutes?" Halle's smile was absolutely flawless.
James's eyes flickered, but the smile stayed put. "Of course. It's better to avoid any misunderstanding."
Halle didn't say anything else, just looked at him.
The implication being that he should step back so she could make her call in peace.
James smiled and backed up a few steps, crossing his arms. His soulful, flirty eyes drifted lazily over Halle.
It really had been a while, but she was just as cold-hearted as he remembered.
