Nina had to admit it had hurt.
It wasn’t that Edgar was truly too stupid to notice Halle was leaving him. He had been lying to himself, fooling himself all along. He knew they had stopped walking the same path ages ago, but he didn’t dare face it. He kept running from reality, numbing himself instead.
Edgar did have feelings for Halle.
Understanding that made Nina feel genuinely awful. She couldn’t claim to be desperately in love with Edgar, but she still hoped he would truly love her and build a life with her.

Tyler didn’t want to say more. “Halle invited us to dinner tomorrow night. Prepare yourself. She’s going to break off the engagement.”
Once Halle made up her mind, she didn’t change it. So, when it came time to host dinner for Tyler and Hayley the next day, she began making arrangements.
She wondered briefly whether she should invite Edgar.
But she quickly gave up on the idea. Sometimes, people drift apart in silence. Not every goodbye needs a ceremony. Sometimes, you say goodbye once and don't even realize it'll be the last time.
Before, Halle had been fixated on the good old days. She couldn’t accept that Edgar had given up on them. That anger sat lodged in her throat, which was why she had never exposed Nina and kept hoping Edgar would apologize on his own.
Now that she’d figured it out, none of that mattered.
Halle’s life had never been particularly dignified—her parents, her relationship, the mess she and Edgar had become...
