Herman had been single for years, so he definitely wouldn't fall for someone that easily.
However, he didn't exactly seem like the type who knew how to take care of people.
Even though she had agreed to give it a try, Blake still took a jab at him. "You probably won't even last a week."
Herman asked, "Do you truly have that little faith in me?"
Blake explained, "Looking after a person drains your time, energy, and emotions. Nobody can maintain that kind of effort without genuine feelings driving them. Your idea completely defies human nature. People simply don't invest that heavily in someone they don't like for long stretches of time."
Herman simply smiled instead of arguing.
He had already fallen too deep for Blake to back out now.
One month felt like absolutely nothing.
He could happily look after her for the rest of his days.
Herman said, "I honestly didn't expect a yes from you."
Blake replied, "It feels nice to be looked after. I never expected you to offer, either. I have absolutely nothing to lose here, so there is no reason for me to decline."
Hearing that, Herman stopped dead in his tracks.
He started wondering if he'd been trapped in the wrong mindset all along.
Maybe a secret crush had a way of making people insecure. In the past, he had been far too cautious when it came to Blake, so cautious that he ended up making everything more complicated than it needed to be.
Blake had always been the carefree type. She had accidentally ended up sleeping with him, and she had accepted it just fine. So maybe she would not mind him being part of her daily life, as long as he respected her personal boundaries.
He was the one who had overthought everything and turned it into a huge problem in his own mind.
That realization left Herman silent for a long moment.
Blake gave his arm a light push. "You get one month. Once that is over, everything goes back to normal."
She was completely confident about that outcome. To her, their arrangement had absolutely no chance of evolving into anything more.
Because of that certainty, her words carried a brutal chill.
Herman hated hearing such a ruthless statement right after finally making a tiny bit of progress.
He lowered his head and captured her lips.
He simply had to do something to ease the faint ache in his chest.
Blake never minded his kisses. He always smelled incredibly fresh, which was a huge plus for her. She had kept him around for the past two years entirely because she adored his physique.
Tonight, however, things were different.
She told him, "I'm way too tired for sex tonight."
Herman countered, "Then let me handle everything." He scooped Blake into his arms and carried her toward the bathroom for a shower together. They both knew the routine perfectly well.
After the shower, Herman took care of her with his mouth.
After Blake came, her whole body relaxed.
He paused what he was doing to and took in the look on her face.
Just then, Blake spoke purely out of habit. She said, "You can leave now."
