Winnie Acosta had climbed up through him, and she knew how to please people. Everyone said she was the perfect lover. But she couldn't actually be a robot, could she? After all this time together, did she really have no feelings for him? Not even a little reluctance to leave?
Even now, Shawn didn't believe Winnie had truly made up her mind to break up with him. He patiently coaxed her. "Babe, you've been happy with me, haven't you?"
Winnie said, "Very happy. I've even made a lot of good friends."
Like Ayla and Halle. If it weren't for Shawn, she never would have had opportunities like that.
"If you're so happy, then don't leave me, okay?" Shawn coaxed.
Winnie said, "But I've made up my mind. You shouldn't stay here tonight. We need to keep our distance."
Only then did Shawn begin to realize that she might actually mean it. She really was breaking up with him.
She still had that sweet, harmless smile on her face and was using her usual playful, affectionate tone, but she was dead serious.
Shawn's first reaction was that it was ridiculous.
How could she be the one breaking up with him? He had treated her well! What exactly was she unhappy about?
Then came anger. If Winnie were truly as obedient and sensible as she had always seemed, she wouldn't be trying to leave him.
And finally Shawn panicked. The thought of Winnie leaving him made his heart race, his composure crack, and his emotions climb higher and higher.
But Winnie had a way of bringing out a man's protective instincts. Her eyes, her voice, everything about her was soft and sweet. It was impossible to stay angry at that face, those big eyes.
So Shawn just touched her cheek. "Babe, how about this? Take some time to think it through before you decide anything. I'm flying to Redmont tomorrow. Let me handle work first, and while I'm gone, just stay home and relax. When I get back, I'll bring you a gift."
Winnie's eyes darted around. "Okay."
She looked so harmless—those big, innocent eyes darted around, so pure and naive. Shawn got fooled by it.
He made a decision he would deeply regret.
If he could go back in time, he would never have gone to Redmont at a moment like that. He would have stayed by Winnie's side, tied her up, and made sure she couldn't go anywhere!
Winnie looked like the type people called "all looks, no brains"—beautiful but empty-headed.
But people grow. Back then, Winnie just never had the chance to learn. Then she met Shawn, and she learned a ton. On top of that, she had an incredibly high EQ and an innocently deceptive look. She could fool almost anyone.
