Zane clicked his tongue and smirked. “I doubt you have anything left. Compared to a beggar like me, a loser is even worse. At least a beggar gets to sit at the table. A loser doesn’t even get invited.”

He finished, then looked at Emmett. “What are you staring at? Go pour me a glass of water. Maybe I’ll be your boss soon. Might as well get used to serving me.”

Emmett usually had a good temper. Even mean words didn’t always make him angry.

But right now, he wanted to borrow Kaleb’s talent for cursing and kick Zane straight out the door.

He held it in and snapped, “Zane, if you can’t talk like a decent human being, shut your mouth.”

Zane shrugged. “That kind of talk only works on people already losing. I’m just sitting here watching you fail. The more you curse, the funnier it gets. Say enough things and maybe I’ll clap for you.”

He turned to Kaleb, who showed almost no reaction.

Zane hated everything about Kaleb’s attitude.

No money. No power. Yet he never bowed his head.

His parents were gone, and his sister was a complete mess. What right did he have to stand so straight?

How could someone living this miserably still hold on to that kind of pride?

Zane wanted to snap that spine piece by piece, watch Kaleb break into something small and pathetic.

That image would be delicious.

Emmett couldn’t stand another word. But Kaleb’s face stayed unreadable, shifting between dark and darker.

A cup of coffee dumped over Zane’s head when Emmett was about to throw Zane out.

Zane froze. Brown liquid dripped onto the floor. He turned slowly, stunned.

And saw Ayla’s ice-cold eyes.

Ayla dropped the empty cup to the ground with a sharp clatter.

Her voice was colder than her stare. “Coffee tastes better than water. Want some more?”

“Ayla!” Zane snapped out of it, teeth grinding. “You threw coffee on me!”

“I’m letting you bark in Kaleb’s office. A cup of coffee is nothing. Can’t handle it? Go die.” Ayla said it without even blinking.

Kaleb shot her a glare.

And badly? It was useless.

Zane didn’t dare lift a hand. She had ten bodyguards behind her. And Kaleb looked like he’d jump in at

any moment.

Zane bit down so hard his jaw nearly cracked.

Ayla was a waste, but her presence was sharper and heavier than he expected.

He wanted to curse, but the second her cold eyes swept over him, his confidence shrank, which only made him hate her more.

Ayla had nothing impressive. Not in marriage, not in career, not in personality. Nothing like Skyla.

Yet she still stood just as straight as Kaleb.

Were all the Keatons this ordinary and this confident?

“Zane only said a few things. He didn’t even hurt anyone. Ayla, why are you throwing a tantrum?” Skyla spoke up, clearly irritated by how ridiculous Zane looked dripping coffee.

“If I were really angry, Zane would already be in the hospital.” Ayla didn’t even look at her. “Please leave.”

Skyla’s face darkened.

The last person who dared disregard her was Halle.

Now Ayla too.

Since coming back to the country, Skyla and Ayla had never faced each other directly. She hadn’t really paid attention before.

But now that she had, the more she looked at Ayla, the more irritated she felt.

“Ayla, do you know why Troy doesn’t love you? You have no sense. No emotional intelligence. You could fix Kaleb’s problem just by quitting your job, but you sit there watching him go bankrupt. Anyone with you as a sister is cursed.”

Skyla knew Ayla still cared about Troy.

Using him was supposed to hit Ayla’s weakest spot.

But she had overestimated herself.

Ayla stayed calm. “So bringing your brother here to kick him while he’s down makes you a good sister?”
