Chapter 109 The News That Changes Everything
Chapter 109 The News That Changes Everything
Skyla lifted her chin, first looking at Ayla, then at Kaleb. “You. And you. Just wait to fall apart.
At that moment, the tech director came rushing over, face full of excitement and disbelief.
The database was fixed. Every file recovered. He was so shocked he nearly shot into the sky.
He had to report the good news to Kaleb right away.
But he was blocked by tall bodyguards and shooed aside.
So he forced himself to wait quietly, buzzing with excitement.\
No one noticed him.
Skyla finished her parting threat and walked out with cold disdain.

Low-level people were impossible to communicate with. She couldn’t understand why Max ever bothered lowering himself to chat with Ayla.
He must have no sense of disgust at all.
With Skyla backing him up, Zane was thrilled.
He glanced at the clean, polished floor, then spat loudly on it.
He pointed at Kaleb and Emmett. “Hear that? You’re both done!”
“Zane, screw you!” Emmett exploded.
“See you, losers!” Dripping in coffee and looking ridiculous, Zane still strutted out like a king.
Emmett nearly passed out from anger. He grabbed a bunch of napkins and threw them on the spit, then called the cleaning crew again.
Ayla walked up to Kaleb, tapped the desk twice, and looked at her brother with genuine surprise. “Your self-control was impressive today.”
Emmett whipped around. “Right! Kaleb! Why didn’t you beat him up? How did you endure that?”
Zane’s insults were still burning in his chest.
Kaleb said coldly, “I’m not stupid. If I hit him, he calls the cops and I lose. And besides, isn’t that what you’re for?”
His gaze moved to Ayla, full of disdain. “And you stepping in didn’t help much. Still pathetic.”
Ayla was speechless.
Emmett: “At least she did something. You stood there like a mute. And you dare complain?”

Kaleb scoffed. “Why wouldn’t I complain? Didn’t you hear what he said? We’re going downhill. He’s right. We’re about to hit rock bottom. What’s the point of fighting?”
He got up from his chair, furious.
He was angry.
But he didn’t even know why.
Maybe because he lost their home. Maybe because Ayla married someone else. Or maybe because he was actually willing to lose the last chance to save his game to spite Skyla and Zane for Ayla’s sake.
It wasn’t just one thing. It was years of resentment piling on top of each other.
Kaleb was a bomb ready to explode.
Anyone poking him now would die.
Which was exactly when the tech director came charging toward him.
“Mr. Keaton-”
“Get. Out.”
The director was glowing with excitement like fireworks in the sky, but Kaleb’s bark hit him like a bucket of ice water dumped over his head. If this were his own son, he’d kick him across the room.
But he didn’t dare. He was too excited. “Mr. Keaton! The system is fixed! All data is restored!”
The director shouted two words, and Kaleb stomped out of the room. Only after a step or two did he hear what was said behind him.
His feet froze on the spot.
Emmett was stunned too.
The tech director didn’t care about the two founders at all. He marched straight to Ayla with a look of pure devotion. His eyes were shining with over-the-top admiration. “Everyone in the tech department is waiting to thank you in person. If you have a moment, they’d love for you to come over and let them show it.”
In the parking lot. Zane reached for Skyla’s car door. She shoved him away with disgust. “Get your own ride.”
“You’re disgusted with me?”
“If I was disgusted, why did I come today? You’re just dirty right now.” Skyla couldn’t stand the sight of
him.
Zane knew she really was disgusted. He snorted twice.

But as long as Kaleb’s company was dying, his mood soared again.
Kaleb’s pitiful face from earlier was something he could remember forever.
Skyla might not know Ayla well, but she wasn’t blind.
Kaleb and Emmett hid it well, but if you looked closely, you could sense their anxiety.
Ayla, though was steady the entire time.
Skyla suddenly recalled something Ayla said earlier. Something about being her senior in school.

She remembered Ayla’s degree. Ayla was also from Agron University’s School of Computer Science. Could she actually know tech?
“Zane, is Kaleb capable of fixing the database?”
“Of course not! If he could, why would Emmett be begging for help everywhere?”
Zane frowned, confused by Skyla’s concern. “Brandon Cole was the core engineer I stole from Kaleb’s company. He knows their firewall inside out. His attack was fatal. The whole database collapsed. You know how impossible repairing that is. How could Kaleb pull it off?”
Skyla asked one more question. “What about Ayla?”

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
