Kaleb almost blurted it out, then caught himself. “I mean… Max just likes making fun of your mess!”

In Kaleb’s eyes, Ayla had been a fool when she liked Troy and wanted to marry him-a person who let love cloud her judgment.

Max might be a jerk, but he had charm, good looks, and money. Ayla was divorced and single now. If he went after her, she could fall for him again.

She didn’t seem interested, but Kaleb wanted to be safe anyway.

She was a bit speechless. “Funny. I must have missed the part where he treats my life like a joke.”

It wasn’t Max who mocked her-it was Rolf, Jed, and Bria.

Max’s explanation actually made sense, and he sounded genuine.

He could at least talk better than Kaleb.

“You’d get eaten alive and not even notice.”

Ayla smirked. “Max came all this way to invest in your company. If he’s here just to laugh, you’re the joke.”

Kaleb was about to argue, but she added, “And you’re wrong about one thing. Your mess isn’t garbage to me. Even if he wanted to watch a joke, I’m not letting it happen.”

He had nothing to say.

Emmett, meanwhile, could hardly stand looking at Kaleb. His face was stormy, and seeing Ayla comforting a grown man felt gross.

Ayla came up to him. “Are you upset?”

Emmett was indeed jealous. He took a step back from Kaleb, kept his distance, shot a sharp look, then turned to Ayla with a sigh.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m not mad at you. I just hate how Kaleb does whatever he wants. He says he won’t cooperate without even asking me!”

Ayla chuckled. “Well, you didn’t tell Kaleb it was Bennett Group. Didn’t you also know that he wouldn’t like Max?”

She hit the nail on the head. Emmett felt a little embarrassed. “Yeah…

Ayla had cut ties with Max because of Troy. She tilted her head. “So, what’s Kaleb’s problem, anyway?”

“At the bar, the first time he saw Max, he didn’t like him. I know Kaleb well, so I noticed right away.”

Emmett was clueless about what got under Kaleb’s skin. “Maybe they just don’t click. I have no idea what he’s thinking. When NewRealm Ventures reached out, I was also shocked. With all the unknowns, I kept it quiet.”

Ayla patted his shoulder. “It’s a shame to turn down NewRealm Ventures, but it wasn’t just Kaleb’s call. I had a say too. So if you’re upset, don’t just blame him. Blame me too.”

That made Emmett even more jealous of Kaleb.

Ayla hadn’t come to dig into the thing between Kaleb and Max. She just wanted to apologize for Kaleb and calm Emmett down.

Kaleb had more control at the company, but Emmett had a vote too as a partner.

Kaleb had been stubborn earlier, ignoring Emmett completely.

Ayla must’ve sensed his frustration and explained it all.

After that, Emmett couldn’t stay mad.

He didn’t want to give that stubborn Kaleb any credit, but for Ayla? He’d give her everything.

“Ayla, you’re making this sound way too serious.”

“Better clear it up now, or it’ll bug you later.”

Emmett felt touched. He wanted to drag Kaleb over just to show him what handling feelings

looked like.

Ayla added, “And I won’t let you take the hit for nothing. I promised more funding. My cash just landed. Tell me how much you need.”

Emmett froze when he heard she came with money. “You already put in 100 million last time. You said this round would top that. You got that much together already?”
