Chapter 153 A Night Without Sleep
Chapter 153 A Night Without Sleep
Troy pulled his gaze away, cold and unreadable.
Why do women love to cry no matter their age?
And why does Ayla never cry?

The question stayed in his mind for a moment. Then he pushed it away and went to his study. He tried to work, but Laura’s tear-streaked face kept flashing in his head.
She was crying for Ayla.
Troy couldn’t understand it. It was a divorce. What was there to cry about?
Ayla had moved out for a month. Laura had been fine all this while. So, why break down now?
He even wondered if Ayla had paid Laura to act sad. Maybe it was all a show, trying to make him think Ayla mattered to the family and divorce was a bad idea, so he would beg her to stay.
The thought made him scoff. If Ayla wanted to leave, she could leave. He wouldn’t stop her.
Not long after, he washed up and went to bed. He usually slept well. He had always been used to sleeping alone, and he could sleep easily.
He expected to fall asleep fast. But an hour passed. Troy opened his eyes and stared at the dark ceiling, his face growing colder. He shut his eyes again.
Ten minutes later, he gave up. He got out of bed, walked to the movie room, and clicked on a random film. He watched “The Shawshank Redemption” with a blank face.
But he wasn’t really watching. His thoughts drifted to his divorced friends-men who had cried their hearts out while drinking, talking about the past, rambling nonsense, and cursing their ex-wives one moment and saying they were the love of their lives the next.
No matter how successful they were, a failed marriage hit them hard.
But that depended on the situation.
Troy didn’t love Ayla. Marriage had only tied him down.
Tomorrow he would be completely free of this troublesome woman. He should be happy,
Still, he couldn’t help wondering, What is Ayla doing right now?
Was she lying awake like him, excited for the end?
Or was she waiting, betting he would stop her?
Knowing how deeply she had cared for him, the second option seemed more likely.

Because once you’ve loved someone that deeply, even if you decide to walk away, it still hurts.
A slow, dark satisfaction spread through Troy. He hoped he would see a worn-out, exhausted Ayla tomorrow. That would make him feel so much better.
Ayla had dinner outside before heading home. Like always, she went straight to the study to work. She didn’t expect her phone to ring-Halle was calling.
“Why are you calling me?” Ayla asked.
“About that flash drive. I want to thank you,” Halle said.
“That’s nothing,” Ayla replied. “You called for something else, right?”
“I’m coming back tomorrow. I’ll be with you.”
Halle always remembered her needs without saying a word. Ayla felt a warm rush in her chest. “Okay. I’ll wait for you.”
After hanging up, Ayla suddenly got a call from Kaleb. She blinked. “Did something happen at the office?”
Kaleb’s annoying voice came through at once. “You’re wishing something would happen to me, aren’t you?”
“No way,” she said. “You’re my only brother. I’m counting on you to make money and spoil me.”
“Don’t get sarcastic. You’re richer than me now.”
Ayla warned, “If you don’t get to the point, I’m hanging up.”
Kaleb said, “Fine, fine. I just want to know when you’re going after Zane. I’ve been holding this frustration in forever.”
Ayla explained, “I was on a business trip-”
“I know you’re busy. Are you done now?”
“Almost.”
“Good.”
She warned, “I’m hanging up-”
“Wait!” Kaleb yelled.

A crash sounded on the other end. Kaleb must’ve shoved Emmett and grabbed the phone back. Then Kaleb growled, “Don’t listen to him. It’s not a big deal. I just want to warn you this, if you suddenly decide not to get divorced, I’m cutting ties with you. Ayla, I’m serious. I’m not joking!”
Then-slam. He hung up.
Ayla stared at the phone. “Seriously?”
Apparently, plenty of people were waiting for her to get divorced. Not just Halle and Kaleb. Will sent her a WhatsApp message too, wishing her a smooth signing tomorrow. Even Shawn and Winnie reached out.
Winnie’s case was understandable. She knew the mess between Ayla and Troy, so gossiping a bit made sense. But Shawn? Why him?
He probably heard the exact date from Will.
And of course, James-king of chaos-sent more than ten messages. That guy even offered to throw her a big party to celebrate her being single. A loud, wild one.
Ayla’s scalp tingled instantly. She rejected him on the spot.
Then, Max messaged her too. Ayla didn’t get a chance to read it before he recalled it. It was probably about the divorce. He must’ve felt awkward, sent the message, then panicked and deleted it.
Ayla didn’t ask.
After all the noise and calls, she couldn’t focus on work anymore. The word “divorce” sat in front of her, sharp and clear. Everyone else was cheering her on, but Ayla was the only one who truly had to face it. No one else could feel the tangle of emotions twisting inside her right now.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
