Halfway through the drinks, Skyla and Rolf were talking about work in the corner. The rest of their friends. were playing pool. Max walked over with a glass in his hand and stopped beside Troy, who had been quiet all night.

He took a sip and asked, “What’s on your mind?”

“Nothing,” Troy said, cold as always.

Max was used to it. “You remember the bet we made a month ago?”

Troy shot him a look, his face tense. “What are you trying to say?”

“I didn’t plan to bring it up. It just popped into my head-Ayla’s been gone for a month now, right?” Max shrugged. “The waiting period for divorce is also a month. Are you two going to sign the papers tomorrow?”

Ayla would definitely show up. The real question was whether Troy would.

Out of all their friends, Max was the one who knew Ayla best. He loved to gossip too, so his question wasn’t strange. But the moment he mentioned the divorce, Troy grew annoyed. He snapped, “You think I’m Ayla? Some kind of stubborn glue you can’t peel off?”

Max explained, “Of course not. We all know how you treat Ayla.”

“Then why ask?”

Max poured Troy another drink, pushed it into his hand, then clinked his glass against it. The crisp sound rang out. Max smirked, and his eyes glimmered. “It’s a toast. To my buddy finally escaping a miserable marriage.”

Troy had known Max since they were kids and was long used to his jokes, but right now he wanted to throw the drink in his face.

“Why aren’t you drinking?” Max asked.

“There’s nothing to celebrate.”

“No?” Max’s smile faded. “Weren’t you the one who kept saying you wanted a divorce? Shouldn’t this be exactly what you wanted?”

“I know.” Troy pressed his lips into a hard line. He knew he was supposed to be happy. And honestly, his mood wasn’t bad. It felt normal, like any other day. But excited? Not really.

“Then drink,” Max said.

In the end, Troy drank the toast celebrating the end of his marriage.

He set the glass down hard on the table and couldn’t stay in the room any longer. He left early and headed home.

Max watched him walk out, his gaze turning darker.

Tomorrow was going to be interesting.

Skyla also watched Troy’s back as he left. She was looking forward to tomorrow too.

Troy came home earlier than usual. Laura was surprised. When she saw the dark look on his face, she hesitated, as if she had something to say but didn’t dare.

Troy noticed. “What do you want to say?”

“Well, Mrs. Winston has been gone for a full month now. I just wanted to ask, when will she be coming back?”

A spark of anger shot through Troy’s chest.

Why was everyone so worried about Ayla? What was so great about her?

Laura jumped at the sudden grim look on his face. “Mr. Winston, a-are you alright?”

Seeing the fear in her eyes, Troy suddenly forced himself to calm down. What was that just now? Why had he gotten so angry? And what was there to be angry about anyway?

He steadied his voice, cold and flat, just like always. “Ayla isn’t coming back.”

Laura’s face changed at once. “Really?”

“Would I lie about that?” Troy’s tone dropped even lower. He didn’t understand why Laura looked so heartbroken. He spoke coldly, “Tomorrow I’m filing the divorce papers. She’s never coming back.”

Laura looked completely shattered. She wanted to speak, but no words came out. Her lips trembled, and then she started to cry.

Troy looked at her in silence.

He had just stepped toward the stairs when her reaction stopped him. He frowned. “Why are you crying?”

Laura didn’t even know why. Just a moment ago, she thought Skyla was a better match for Troy, She thought Ayla was too dramatic and always causing tension in the house. But hearing that the divorce was real and Ayla was truly leaving forever, she suddenly found she couldn’t accept this.

All she could think about were the good moments from the past three years. How Ayla let her rest when she was tired, how she bought her patches for her back pain, how she reminded her to get her full checkup every year, and how she cared for her even more than Laura’s daughter did.

The more she thought about it, the sadder she became. What started as quiet tears turned into full sobs.
