Draven’s voice sounded the same as always-cool and calm. Ayla suddenly felt like she was being questioned. A little pressure rose in her chest. “Today was an exception,” she said softly.
“Is that so?” Draven replied out of nowhere. “I thought you were doing it on purpose. For Troy.”
Ayla had gotten used to being around Draven, but his words still surprised her.
She hadn’t looked at him during their earlier conversation, but now she couldn’t help turning her head.
His side profile was striking-a sharp jawline, a clean line down to his throat, and shoulders that were broad in a way no teenager could compare to.
This time, Ayla didn’t follow his lead. She said, “Mr. Storm, I always thought you didn’t take Troy seriously, but forgive me, I think you actually care a lot about him.”
Draven didn’t respond right away.
He turned his head, glanced at her, and then focused on the road again.
Ayla explained, “Because you keep linking everything I do to Troy. Mr. Storm, Troy really isn’t that important. If I got a new boyfriend today, would you also say it’s just to get back at Troy? Wouldn’t that mean my whole life still revolves around him?”
She smiled. “Troy doesn’t deserve that. I’ve moved on. I’m not stuck in place anymore. He’s not important to me now. Does that make sense for you, Mr. Storm?”
These weren’t the kind of words Ayla felt she owed to anyone.
But she was holding onto Draven’s support now. When it came to Troy, she needed to prove herself again and again.
Draven didn’t answer right away. He drove through one more intersection, turned the wheel, and parked outside the M.L. boutique.
Ayla remembered the divorce gift he promised her.
It must be the glass set from M.L.
She waited for Draven to get out first.
But suddenly he said, in a dry tone, “Oh. So, you just like having a good time with male escorts.”
Words died out in Ayla’s tongue.
Draven looked at her. “Then you shouldn’t have skipped James’s party.”
“Mr. Storm, I-”
He offered, “Want to go? I can take you right now.”

“No, Mr. Storm, that’s okay.”
“Because I’m here?” he asked.
“It’s not that.”
He pushed. Then do you want to go?”
“I don’t want to!”
Then why hire a male escort if you don’t like it?”
Ayla took a breath. I’ve never tried that kind of service. I just wanted to see what it was like.”
And after trying it?”
“Well, uh…
“Tell me.
His questions came one after another, sharp and firm.
There was no room for her to lie. “Being spoiled a little-who wouldn’t enjoy that?” Ayla admitted.
She expected Draven to push more, but he didn’t.
He only gave her a long look, opened the door, and stepped out.
Ayla watched him walk around the front of the car toward the store. After a few steps, he noticed she hadn’t moved and turned back to look at her.
Then she saw him walk closer.
A man nearly six foot three stood at her door, the air around him heavy and powerful.
Ayla froze on the spot.
Suddenly, Ayla heard a soft click.
The car door swung open from the outside.
Draven’s long arm rested on the doorframe as he looked down at her. “Get out.”
Ayla said nothing.
She stepped out right away. When she straightened up, she realized Draven’s other hand was held above her head by a few inches. He was probably protecting her from hitting the door.
Ayla stared at him, stunned.
He was way too thoughtful.

Draven’s face stayed calm. When their eyes met, she didn’t feel his usual coldness. He just looked at her
quietly, steadily, and unreadably.
Ayla wanted to ask him something.
Draven had already walked into the store.
His broad shoulders, narrow waist, and long legs made him stand out without trying.
There was something strange about it.
Troy’s back could hurt her, but Draven’s never did.
Instead, she was eager to follow him, almost instantly.
Inside the store, Draven sat in the lounge area.
Ayla didn’t need instructions. She went to pick a gift she liked, knowing Draven would pay.
These cups were expensive. If they weren’t close, she would never accept a gift like this.
But this time, he wanted to give her something. Refusing would feel wrong.
Ayla took her time choosing. She wasn’t in a hurry anyway.
She already had a cup shaped like a tree, and Draven’s cup was shaped like a star.
She didn’t know what she wanted until she saw a moon-shaped cup. The moment she spotted it she knew. That was the one.
She asked a staff member to bring the cup to Draven for approval.
She followed the staff toward the lounge.
Surprisingly, she found Draven fully focused on a small set of building blocks. Yes. Building blocks the size of his palm.
He had just finished the base, so Ayla still couldn’t tell what it was supposed to be.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
