Ayla glanced at Draven’s long fingers resting on the steering wheel. “But I guess it evens out. She gives me trouble, but you’ve got my back, so I’m not scared of her. Mr. Howell is reasonable-he didn’t let his sister blow up just now.”
Draven stayed focused on the road.
If he made their relationship public, Ayla would definitely run into problems. But at the same time, very few people would dare mess with her.
Still, the timing wasn’t right. Martin’s birthday was coming up. If he announced it now, he’d have to explain things to too many people.
Then at the birthday banquet, everyone would be talking about him and Ayla instead of celebrating Martin.
Ayla was still clutching her bag, her laptop tucked inside.
Draven noticed and said, “Give it to me.”
She instinctively loosened her grip.
With his longer reach, he took the bag and smoothly set it on the back seat.
Ayla saw that and smiled.
Draven was two years younger than James, yet he always ended up looking after others. Ayla was 24, four years younger than Draven. With that age gap, he took care of her in every possible way.
That night, she got drunk, and he dried her hair before she fell asleep. After that, they hadn’t seen each other for a whole week.
Only now did Ayla finally thank him.
“Thank me for what?” he asked.
“For helping me dry my hair that night when I was drunk.”
Draven lowered his eyes slightly, remembering how she’d unconsciously called out Troy’s name.
Ayla didn’t notice the shift in his mood and went on, “I should’ve contacted you this week.”
Draven paused.
He’d been tangled up in that question all week.
Since she brought it up herself, he asked casually, “Why didn’t you message me?”
“I was worried you’d be too busy,” Ayla replied.

“…I see.”
He couldn’t believe he’d been hung up on something that simple for a whole week. He’d never been affected like that before.
Ayla caught the hint. “Were you waiting for my message?”
“Yes,” Draven said.
This time, she was the surprised one.
He smoothly found a flawless excuse. “Blake said you’re resigning. Why didn’t you tell me?”
Ayla wasn’t surprised anymore. “I didn’t have time. When I woke up that day, you were already gone.”
Then she explained, “It’s about my career. I’m starting a business with Halle. She’s waited three years for me. Now we’re doing it together.”
They were putting everything into making money and building their future.
After the divorce, Ayla turned her focus back to herself and found her drive again. She wanted to try more. felt full of energy, alive, and excited.
It felt amazing-something she’d never felt before.
Even her body seemed to be telling her that she and Troy had never been right.
“Draven, I’ve worked at your company for three years. Looking back, it feels unreal.”
Halle was right. There were so many easier jobs out there. Why had Ayla chosen Draven’s company back then? If she hadn’t, none of this would’ve happened.
Draven had expected her to resign eventually. With her ability, she was never meant to stay a secretary forever.
“I’m happy for you,” he said.
“Thanks,” Ayla replied. “I thought you’d be more shocked.”
Draven asked, “Why did you apply to be my secretary in the first place?”
He’d never really asked before.
Ayla hesitated.
It involved her past with Troy. She’d never mentioned the details of how they were together.
Seeing her go quiet, Draven figured it out. “If you don’t want to say it, that’s fine.”
Honestly, he didn’t want to hear it.

Because it would only make him more jealous of Troy.
That was something he’d learned this past week.
Jealousy was scary.
It could make him lose control and do stupid things, like deliberately outbidding others for that oil painting, something even Herman couldn’t understand.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
