After he got to know Bria's temper, Emmett no longer found any joy in his misfortune. Instead, he felt bad for his best friend and just hoped Bria would stay far away from Kaleb.
But the first time Emmett saw Bria, and she was around their age, he couldn't help but admire her looks. His first reaction was pure shock. Her features were striking, with a refined oval face.
She was both delicate and cold, and unbelievably beautiful. He had never seen a girl so attractive—especially her eyes, which naturally carried a hint of arrogance and disdain for everything. Her entire presence radiated the aura of someone born into privilege.
Standing next to her, Emmett felt like some street punk who should be bowing to her.
Bria's background was also incredibly powerful. The gap in status and influence was too big. Emmett could only keep his head down.
In terms of power, neither he nor Kaleb could afford to provoke her.
And yet Bria had taken the initiative to target Kaleb. She had someone beat up his best friend, and even after that, she still wasn't satisfied and kept causing trouble. It made Emmett uneasy.
What he feared most was Bria going after their company. For example, she could delay approvals or mess with procedures. After all, she had connections in the government. And back then, Troy had invested in their competitor, Zane's company. If Bria gave resources to Zane, they would be in for a tough fight again.
Fortunately, after so much time had passed, Bria seemed to have let it go. She hadn't come looking for trouble.
Emmett felt a little more at ease and spent his days praying that Kaleb would never run into Bria again.
Emmett was the kind of person who knew when to back down. But Kaleb was the complete opposite. He didn't respond to either pressure or persuasion. He was extremely proud and stubborn.
Even though there was a huge gap in status between him and Bria, Kaleb didn't care about that. And in his eyes, there was no difference between men and women. He wouldn't go easy on anyone. If they ever clashed, it would get to the point where both sides wanted to destroy each other.
If it were Emmett, he would have already sucked up to her. He knew he was a coward. Kaleb was the total opposite. But working together, Kaleb's strong personality meant he wouldn't get pushed around, while Emmett could smooth things over with words. Together, they worked perfectly as a team.
So Emmett never nitpicked Kaleb. It was rare to find someone like him now—someone who could stay composed and stood his ground.
But Bria had real power behind her. They couldn't go up against her head-on.
When Emmett heard that Ayla and Draven had gotten back together, he was overjoyed.
He couldn't predict whether his best friend would have a bigger conflict with Bria in the future, but at least Ayla and Draven could step in if things got out of hand.
He had even heard that Bria was obsessed with Ayla.
Sometimes Emmett even felt like he should pay his respects to Ayla every day.
Even now, he and Kaleb were still relying on Ayla to survive.
"Are you sure?" Kaleb's expression visibly darkened.

"You have to do that, Kaleb. Think about our company. It can't handle any setbacks. You can't afford to piss her off. Let's just keep our mouths shut, okay?"

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
