The tension was on the verge of snapping.
Even back in Frenchante, it never felt this suffocating.
When Kaleb is truly disappointed in someone, he doesn't argue or show anger. He erases them completely, like they never mattered, without a trace of emotion.
God knows what happened between them for things to escalate this far. They just went out together on Valentine's Day. How long has it even been?
Emmett sighed to himself as he drove.
They had just arrived at the restaurant. Before Emmett and Bria could even get out of the car, Kaleb happened to be driving out in Matilda's car. They ran straight into him.
Emmett immediately turned to look at Bria's expression.
She had her hood up the entire time, only the lower half of her face visible, but even so, the calm she gave off carried a thread of something unhinged beneath it.
Emmett didn't even know what to say.
Bria lifted her gaze slightly and spoke flatly. "Follow him.”
Worried something might happen, Emmett drove while texting Kaleb, asking what was going on.
But Kaleb didn't reply.
Kaleb was driving fast. They almost lost him.
Eventually, Kaleb pulled into a private hospital.
After getting out, he quickly walked around the car and opened the door.
Matilda's manager helped her out of the car.
Kaleb stayed by her side the entire time.
Only then did Emmett finally get a reply from Kaleb.
Matilda had suddenly gotten a stomachache, possibly acute gastroenteritis. The driver had gone to the restroom, so Kaleb stepped in to drive her to the hospital.
Emmett explained to Bria, "Matilda's got acute gastroenteritis. That's why Kaleb brought her here.”
The explanation should've cleared things up, but the air in the car only grew heavier.
Emmett didn't dare say another word.
The anger in Bria's chest was like a shaken bottle of soda being opened, exploding all at once.
Emmett might not know what it meant for Kaleb to personally bring someone to the hospital, but Bria did.
It was those little details that had made her think Kaleb was cold on the outside but warm inside, someone who did more than he said. That was how she'd slowly fallen for him.
Her possessiveness flared up. She wanted to be the only one he treated that way, not just another person receiving that same care and urgency from him.
Bria wanted to be special.
She wanted to be the only one in his eyes.
If Kaleb hadn't overheard her conversation with Andrew, then right now, she and Kaleb would still be in that ambiguous stage, eventually getting together. She would've slowly trained him into someone who only saw her, only cared about her.
It's only been a couple of days, and he's already going out of his way for someone else?
Kaleb is not allowed to be the kind of guy who treats everyone well.
The anger burned hotter, turning into something sharper. How could Kaleb do this?

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
