Teresa was stunned for a second. “What did you say?”

Jonathan’s voice was low. “I’m at the airport. My flight leaves in half an hour. If you go by local time, I’ll land home around eight tonight.”

Teresa responded, “So you’re coming back to take Mike with you, right?”

“Take Mike where? I’m not leaving again. This time, I’m staying for good.” Jonathan hung up the phone.

It was the first time Jonathan had ever hung up on her, and Teresa just sat there, completely spaced out. A moment later, her phone started ringing.

It was Benny calling her. “Jonathan’s coming back! He’ll be in Nareigh at eight tonight.”

“Oh, I know,” Teresa finally snapped back to reality. ‘So, it’s true, he is coming back. This is really happening!’

Benny laughed. “I knew he’d call you first. I thought you might not know yet.”

Teresa explained, “It was Mike who told him Felix was sick. He’s probably coming back to see the boys.”

Benny raised an eyebrow. “Oh yeah? What happened to the little guy?”

“He got a fever from indigestion, but it’s nothing serious. The fever’s already gone down.” Teresa planned to take Felix home this afternoon.

Benny said, “Which hospital are you at? I’ll come pick you and Felix up. I’ve got nothing going on today.”

“No need, I’m driving myself.”

“Then I won’t bother driving over. Let me be your chauffeur instead.”

Seeing that he wasn’t going to let up, Teresa told him she was at Nareigh General Hospital, in the pediatrics department.

“I’ll swing by the office to clock in, and then I’ll head over,” Benny said and ended the call.

Teresa glanced at the time. It was only seven in the morning–no rush. Jonathan wouldn’t be back for another thirteen hours.

She wanted to tell Michael the news, but he’d already left for kindergarten. A little while later, Donald came back and told Teresa he’d dropped Michael off at kindergarten. “Mike told me Jonathan’s coming back. Is that true?”

“Yeah, he’ll be back tonight.”

“Oh,” Donald thought, Jonathan has been gone for a long time. Today is January sixth.“So, who’s going to pick him up? Is he coming back on his own?”

“Don’t worry about that. Do you think he’d be short on people to pick him up? Benny will probably go get him,” Teresa said as she started packing up Felix’s things.

But she just couldn’t stop smiling, no matter how hard she tried. People say the pain of being apart shows just how much you miss someone. She had to admit that she missed him.

The more she thought about him coming back, the more her heart started to race.

That afternoon, Benny showed up, surprised to see Teresa had spent the whole night here by herself, taking care of Felix. “Seriously, Teresa, why put yourself through this? Why not just get a nanny to help?”

“He had a fever. There’s no way I could leave him alone. I had to be here with him.”

Benny let out a sigh, thinking, ‘Parents do have it tough. Their hearts are always with their kids.‘
