Chapter 10

Everyone froze stiff when they heard Ashton say the name “Goober“.

Who was he calling Goober? Had he lost his mind?

Only Moe, who’d worked for Gene for over a decade now, tensed up. Ever since Gene had cemented his foothold in Javonbury’s criminal underworld, no one dared speak that name aloud in his presence.

Gene came from a rural village where parents often gave their children crude, almost insulting names. It was a local belief that doing so helped ensure that the child would grow up well.

The name Goober implied someone who was dumb or naive, but the wise said that ignorance was bliss, so they hoped he would be able to live a blissful, carefree life.

As far as Moe was aware, Gene had once ruined a person and his entire family for calling him Goober. It was his biggest sore spot.

Seeing Gene’s face darken, Moe grabbed a nearby beer bottle and swung it toward Ashton’s head.

“You’ve got a death wish, punk!”

However, before the bottle hit Ashton, he struck first by kicking Moe with his left leg. Moe, who was almost six feet tall, flew through the air in an arc before slamming heavily on the floor. He let out a chilling scream.

Instantly, Gene’s men scowled and surrounded both Ashton and Sylvia. A murderous air hung thick in the bar.

No one had expected anyone to dare start a fight right in front of Gene in Noir Bar–and even attack one of Gene’s closest subordinates, no less! It was nothing short of an act of suicide.

Some bystanders instinctively backed away from Ashton, not wanting his blood to get on them.

“Ashton’s done for now!” Calvin, who was watching everything unfold, couldn’t help but clap his hands in delight. He was certain that with Gene’s temper, he would definitely kill Ashton.

Even if Ashton survived, he’d be seriously injured nonetheless.

Calvin felt vindicated.

“Why is he still being so impulsive?” Roxy fumed, her expression hard as she thought about stepping in to help Ashton out of this mess. Regardless of everything else, she still cared a bit about him.

“What are you doing, Roxy? Gene’s definitely angry right now. If you go over there, he might not even spare you either! You know what these people from the criminal underworld are like. They’re capable of anything. Even if something happens, they’ll just get one of their lackeys to take the fall!”

Calvin gripped her arm to stop her.

“But he’s Celia’s father. I can’t just stand by and watch him die.”

“Listen to me, Roxy. Ashton brought this upon himself! If he doesn’t suffer now, he won’t learn his lesson. He’ll just do it again next time!”

“But-”

“No buts, Roxy. In any case, if you go over there now, you’ll only anger Gene even more. Since we’re in his territory right now, it’s best if we stay out of it.”

Chapter 10

After deliberating for a moment, Roxy decided not to go over there. Calvin was right. Ashton should face some consequences. Otherwise, he would still think he was invincible. He had yet to see where he truly stood in this world.

The tension in the air intensified. Gene’s men were prepared to pounce on Ashton, but he completely ignored them and eyed Gene coldly, remarking, “Are you sure you want to start a fight with me, Goober?”

Just as Gene’s men were about to attack Ashton, Gene tensed up and barked, “Hold it!”

“Let me fuck this punk up tonight, boss!”

Moe staggered to his feet, wiping blood from his mouth. His eyes were bloodshot. Gene stopped him and snapped, “Stand down!”

Much to his shock, Moe noticed a look of solemnness and caution on Gene’s face. Gene lived up to his reputation for being a thug in a suit. Usually, when something like this happened, he would’ve had the offender crippled by

now.

Being one of Gene’s most trusted subordinates, Moe had a good understanding of Gene. He lowered his voice and asked, “Is he somebody important, boss?”

Moe forced himself to regain his composure. After recalling the strength in that kick earlier, he continued, “Boss, that punk is no ordinary man. Even though I could tell he held back just now, the kick he gave me is still killing me. It feels like my insides have been damaged!”

Gene said nothing. He simply continued to stare at Ashton. Slowly, the figure before him merged with the memory of someone he’d known ten years ago.
