Chapter 11

The man from ten years ago was someone that Gene looked up to a great deal!

“Is that you, Mr. Gray?”

Ten years ago, a legend appeared in Javonbury’s criminal underworld. Even at a very young age, he stood on equal footing with the other well–established bosses. Everyone called him Mr. Gray.

With his extraordinary power, he took down all his opponents and rose to power by stepping on the corpses of several notorious criminal bosses.

“It’s been ten years, Goober. You’re no longer the penniless student running for your life, huh? Look at you. You’ve become a formidable figure yourself!” Ashton commented slightly ominously as he looked at Gene.

“I would never dream of accepting such high praise, Mr. Gray!” Gene exclaimed in alarm.

Once he confirmed Ashton’s identity, he quickly snapped at his men to back off. Gone was the ferocity in his eyes. His expression was filled with nothing but respect now.

“I truly had no idea it was you, Mr. Gray. Nothing in the world could ever give me the audacity to be disrespectful toward you!”

Moe and the rest of Gene’s men were gobsmacked to see the fawning look on Gene’s face. They’d never seen him act that humble and timid before!

According to the classification of martial arts expertise, Gene was a B–ranked expert. If he gave his all in a fight, he could even challenge the A–ranked experts. Most importantly, he was a proud man who’d never submitted to anyone.

Even when facing someone who was more powerful and influential than him, he stood tall and refused to lower his head.

“Let’s go,” Ashton said to Sylvia. He was in no mood to catch up with Gene.

“Mr. Gray! I’ve got a few bottles of excellent liquor here. Why don’t we have a few drinks?” Gene asked tentatively.

Ashton shook his head. “Maybe another day.”

For the time being, he hadn’t figured out his next move yet. Therefore, he didn’t want to have too many interactions with people from the underworld like Gene.

It’d taken him ten years–and cost him a huge sacrifice–before he managed to extract himself from that world. If he rejoined it, it would most likely be impossible for him to escape again.

“Then, at least let me give you a ride?” Gene offered.

“Sure.”

Ashton didn’t refuse Gene’s offer. Both he and Sylvia had been drinking, so they were in no position to drive. He firmly believed that one had to be sober to drive.

Just like that, the explosive situation fizzled out into nothing, much to most people’s disappointment.

“Huh? Gene Larson doesn’t seem as ruthless or domineering as they say. He actually seems pretty reasonable,” someone muttered.

Soon, the atmosphere at Noir Bar became lively once more.

Calvin, however, clenched his fists so tight his knuckles turned white. Watching Gene treat Ashton like an old friend made him grind his teeth in fury.

He couldn’t figure out why Gene went so easy on Ashton. What happened to the ruthlessness Gene had when he dealt with him earlier?

Compared to what just happened, Calvin looked like a clown!

“They’re all the same kind of scum!” Calvin spat out in contempt. “Roxy, I bet Ashton and Gene are acquainted. They were screwing with me on purpose!”

Roxy frowned. What she hated the most was Ashton mingling with people from the criminal underworld. Back then, he’d promised her that he would cut off all ties with his past. From the looks of it now, he’d clearly lied to her!

“Sooner or later, those bastards will all end up behind bars! Once I make it big in Javonbury, I’ll root them all out! “Calvin snapped resentfully.

Rubbing her forehead, Roxy said, “I’m getting tired. I’ll give you a ride back to the hotel. You should get some rest.

“Why don’t you stay with me tonight, Roxy?”

After leaving Noir Bar with Roxy, Calvin was still stewing in his frustration. He refused to give up. He wanted to get Roxy in bed tonight.

“Give me some time, Calvin,” Roxy said as she stood three feet away from him.

Noticing that she was in a bad mood, he quickly said, “Yes, I get it. I’ll wait for you no matter what. Fate will see to it that those who are meant to be together end up together.”

“Thank you.”

“I’ll drop you off at your place, Roxy, and then I’ll take a cab back to the hotel. I can’t rest easy if I don’t see you returning safely home myself.”

“Alright, then.”

Roxy wanted to spend more time with Calvin, too. She wanted to rekindle the sparks she once felt for him, her first love. Yet, for some reason, after reuniting with him now, her heart no longer stirred the way it used to.

However, she believed she simply needed time.
