It was only then that Roxy remembered the past. Back when Amelia was still a nobody, it was Ashton who had repeatedly encouraged Amelia to chase her dreams, providing her with a great deal of help, too.

That was the only thing that kept Amelia from straying off the path of pursuing her dream all these years, until she finally achieved the success she had now.

Amelia stood tall in her leather pants that accentuated her striking figure. Her attractive face was just as captivating. At the mention of Ashton, a tender smile appeared on her face. She didn’t try to hide the truth from Roxy.

“That’s right, Ms. Sloan,” she responded to Roxy’s previous question.

“I’m sure you’re aware of how miserable my life was in the past—the way I was at the mercy of everyone around me. I don’t mind telling you how bad it was. To be honest, Ms. Sloan, on the night before I met Mr. Gray, I’d already decided to give up on singing altogether.

“I was even considering working at a bar, but it was Mr. Gray who came into my life and gave me the courage to hang in there. Over the years, many companies tried to lure me away with lucrative contracts, but I refused them all for one simple reason. I want to repay the debt of gratitude I owe Mr. Gray.

“As long as Mr. Gray was still a part of Summit Group, I would’ve continued working with the company, regardless of how much money I got. But now…”

It was unclear whether Amelia’s tone indicated joy or ruefulness. “Since you and Mr. Gray have filed for divorce, Ms. Sloan, there’s no reason for me to stick around with the company any longer. I hope you understand.”

Sure enough, it was because of Ashton. Why was it him again!

Roxy’s chest tightened painfully. Problems that had never been problems were now coming at her one after another, catching her completely off guard.

“Stop pretending to be so noble, Amelia! What’s all this nonsense about repaying a debt of gratitude, huh? Are we still living in the olden days? I can’t believe you’re giving us such a ridiculous excuse!” Calvin piped up scornfully.

“Don’t think I don’t know that you’re just trying to squeeze out more money from us. Go on, then. Tell us how much it’ll take for you to stay on at Summit Lounge.

“But before that, allow me to remind you that it’s not as if we can’t hire a band that’s even more famous than you are! Don’t think too highly of yourself. The world doesn’t stop spinning with you.”

Both Roxy’s and Anna’s faces stiffened at that. They both knew how proud Amelia was, and what Calvin said would only make things worse!

Roxy couldn’t take it anymore. She finally snapped, “Keep your mouth shut!”

Was Calvin truly the guy she’d spent her entire youth pining over? Why was he such an incredible idiot?

“Please don’t be upset, Amelia. Calvin only said those things in the heat of the moment. He didn’t mean it,” Roxy hastily explained, afraid that there wouldn’t even be a chance of keeping Amelia around.

Roxy frowned. These words made her feel quite uncomfortable. It was her first time hearing that the proud and aloof Amelia had been in love with Ashton this whole time.
