She continued to mock him mercilessly. “Honestly, I used to think you were just worthless, lowly, and incompetent. I didn’t expect you to be a brazen liar on top of all that. You’re utterly shameless and despicable! How did it take me this long to see how phony you are? Do you see this, Roxy? You were absolutely right to divorce him!”

Ashton said evenly, “What’s real is real, and what’s fake is fake. Have someone appraise the diamond if you don’t believe me.”

In truth, he didn’t care what Tanya and the others thought. He just didn’t want Renee to get the wrong idea. “Still talking tough, huh? Robert, don’t you know several expert jewelers? Reach out to them and have them check whether this diamond is the real deal! If it’s fake, I want this vermin barred from ever setting foot in our home again!” Tanya seethed.

“Mom, that’s not necessary. I believe what Ashton says,” Renee said frantically.

“Of course it’s necessary! Renee, if the diamond is fake, it’ll be enough for you to see Ashton’s true colors. And after that, stop talking about how great he is!” Robert cried.

His eyes hardened. “Ashton, if you admit now that the diamond is fake, you’ll still have a way out of this. The chance will be gone once I get in touch with Stanley Colson, an expert jeweler!”

“Go ahead.” Ashton looked unfazed. “If The Lustra is fake, I’ll do as your mother said and never set foot here again.”

“Fine. You said it yourself!” Tanya urged, “Hurry up and call Mr. Colson!”

“But what if The Lustra is genuine? What will you do?” Ashton looked at her icily.

She felt a sudden, inexplicable chill shoot up her spine when she met Ashton’s gaze. She stiffened for a split second before bristling. “If it’s real, I’ll get on my knees and apologize to you! As if that could happen!”

She lifted her chin, looking smug and scornful. “I know exactly what a piece of trash you are, Ashton. How could you possibly produce a diamond worth 50 million dollars? Don’t take us for fools!”

“You said it yourself. I’ll be waiting for you to kneel and apologize,” Ashton said coolly.
