Chapter 143
“T–The Northern Troops have surrounded us! We’re surrounded!”
Conrad was shocked for a moment. T
he yelled at Kyle, “What nonsense are you spewing? The Northern Troops belong to the Legion. They may be ruthless and heartless when on a killing spree, but they only kill the most heinous criminals!
“So, what on earth would they be surrounding us for?”
“But it’s true, Chief Nell! I can recognize the Northern Troops‘ flag, and it’s blowing in the wind! The other officers are so frightened that
all on their knees! We’re terrified of getting beheaded by the troops!” Kyle
cried in despair.
“How could this be?” Conrad asked, feeling terrified. “Did they find out that I’d been accepting bribes? But the Northern Troops never cared about these…”
“Chief Nell, do you think they’re here for Ashton?”
“Impossible!”
“Think about it, Chief Nell! Everything was fine right before we laid a finger on Ashton! But right after we caught him, trouble stirred in South Javonbury, investors withdrew their resources, and someone from the Gale Assembly even said that they wished to speak to you.
“And now, the Northern Troops have arrived! The whole mess began the moment we brought Ashton Gray in!”
Conrad fell silent. Then, he turned to Calvin.
“Calvin Emerson! Didn’t you tell me that Ashton had no one backing him whatsoever? Is this what you meant by that?”
Conrad regretted everything. He couldn’t believe that he was now about to lose his life because he’d been greedy.
Calvin scratched the back of his head and said, “But Mr. Nell, Ashton is nothing but a gangster! He’s even gotten on the wrong side of Kayla Clarkson from the Legion before.
“I don’t believe that the Northern Troops are here for Ashton. There has got to be some misunderstanding here! Maybe they’re here to arrest Ashton too!”
Conrad went silent again. Then, he said in a low voice, “Kyle, go to the cell with Calvin and make sure we get Ashton’s confession, by hook or by crook. We will have the law on our side as long as we have his confession. I’ll be able to hold off everyone else with it. Go now! Hurry!”
“Yes, chief!”
Kyle and Calvin hurried off at once.
Conrad then inhaled deeply and jogged out of the station. However, when he saw the vast, imposing Northern Troops surrounding the station with a murderous aura, he got such a huge fright that he felt the sweat rolling down his back at once.
Was all of this really necessary? This looked like the troops were ready for a mutiny!
Conrad suppressed the fear in his chest and met with Neil’s gaze. Suddenly, he felt his heart tremble, and his pupils dilated in horror.
He recognized Neil!

This was Lawrence’s personal secretary and right–hand man. He was a slirewd and ruthless man who didn’t hesitate to kill.
“Mr. Bloomberg!” Conrad called out in a shaky voice.
Neil thundered, “Release him!”
Conrad shook harder. “M–May I know who you want released, Mr. Bloomberg?”
“Ashton Gray!” Neil replied coldly.
When Conrad heard Ashton’s name, he suddenly realized that he was dead meat. His face paled immensely.
However, he still put on a strong front and forced himself to ask, “May I know what your relationship to Ashton Gray is? Ashton is currently… He’s currently assisting us in investigating an incident.”
“Ashton has no relationship with me…”
Conrad sighed in relief when he heard that.
However, Neil continued to say, “Ashton is a student of the head of the Legion, and he has specifically requested to see Ashton now. You arrested the person the head wanted to see! Do you now know what crime you have committed?”
Conrad felt as though a bomb had just gone off in his head.
Ashton was someone whom the head of the Legion specifically wanted to see?
Conrad fell to the ground on his knees with a loud thud. He had actually arrested the person the head of the Legion had requested!
He knew the head’s temper and his tendency to kill whoever dared to defy him without giving the other any chance to defend themselves. And to think that he’d arrested the very person whom the head wanted to see! That was akin to digging his own grave and jumping right into it!
Suddenly, Conrad recalled Ashton’s calm, unperturbed expression earlier. No wonder he had been so calm about everything–he had such a deep connection with the head of the Legion!
“I’ve made a grave mistake! I committed a heinous crime!”
Conrad didn’t even bother defending himself anymore. At this point, the more he tried to defend himself, the faster he would die. On the other hand, he would likely still have a chance of survival if he admitted to his wrongdoing immediately.
“Where is he?” Neil thundered again, recalling how much Lawrence treasured Ashton.
“In… In the cell…”
Conrad’s mind was completely blank now. He no longer cared if he got to keep his job anymore. It was more important that he save his own life!
“Take me there! And Northern Troops, continue surrounding the area. Nobody is allowed to leave once they’ve entered this place!” Neil instructed.
He knew very well that many people were concerned about Ashton’s safety tonight. Since that was the case, he would make sure to use the Northern Troops to create a huge commotion on Ashton’s behalf.
Meanwhile, Conrad quickly led the way, praying hard that nothing bad had happened to Ashton.
