Ashton could feel the warmth of Kayla’s soft body and the delicate curve of her waist under his hand, but all he could do was sigh inwardly.

Lawrence was very obviously setting him up, but what choice did he have? As the deputy head of the Legion, he had to step forward and help out. He couldn’t possibly let Kayla marry Clay and become a part of the Dominion Vanguard.

Besides, he didn’t like Clay anyway. He was more than happy to team up with Lawrence and humiliate someone as conceited as Clay.

Immediately, Clay stepped forward and glowered murderously at Ashton, declaring, “You’re Ashton Gray, yeah? Since Mr. Clarkson Senior has given you Kayla’s hand in marriage, I’m sure that means you excel in some way.

“I hereby challenge you to a duel to the death! You and I will fight solo to determine who is the better man, with only one of us walking out of here alive. Do you dare accept my challenge?”

No one expected Clay to challenge Ashton like this.

“No!” Kayla hastily cried out.

Clay was an SS–ranked supreme grandmaster, making him one of the most powerful of his generation. His father was the deputy head of the Dominion Vanguard, which proved the formidable power of their family bloodline.

“If word got out about this, it would sully the Legion’s reputation!”

Lawrence glanced at Clay before shaking his head. “You’re a talented young man, Clay. I advise you not to engage in this duel to the death. If you do, there will only be two outcomes.

“Either you die here today, or your cultivation resolve will be broken. You’ll be forever plagued with an inner demon that will ensure you’ll never reach the peak of the martial path.”
