Roxy looked at Calvin’s handsome face and realized she could no longer find that schoolgirl flutter in her heart. Now, she only found him rather sleazy and even a little revolting.
The halo of “first love” that had clouded her judgment shattered piece by piece after everything he’d done since returning to Casoria.
“Calvin, don’t do this. Get up first,” Roxy said, frowning.
Setting aside whether she still liked Calvin, she hated this kind of coercive, pressure–filled proposal.
“I’m not getting up! Roxy, if you don’t agree to marry me, I’ll stay on my knees forever!”
Calvin gritted his teeth, his bloodshot eyes blazing like a gambler who’d lost his mind.
He believed that even if Roxy were wavering, she would ultimately be forced by his pleading to say yes. He’d prepared for this proposal for so long. It had to succeed, and he wouldn’t allow it to fail. If he got rejected, he’d be utterly humiliated!
“Calvin, don’t be like this! Our relationship hasn’t reached that point yet!” Roxy lowered her voice, her irritation growing.
“How are we not at that point? Don’t we like each other? Aren’t I your first love? How can you bear to refuse me? Marry me, please! I’m begging you!”
Calvin was nearly pleading. He was betting that Roxy would cave.
“I’m sorry,” Roxy said calmly. “Let’s start by being friends.”
With one sentence, Calvin’s hopes were crushed to dust. He kneeled there stupefied, his body as still as a statue. His face burned like he’d been repeatedly slapped in public.
This was an utter humiliation!
The entire Summit Lounge fell so silent that one could hear a pin drop. Only after a long moment did the people start to whisper.
“Oh my God. Ms. Sloan actually rejected Calvin! Didn’t he swear up and down that he’d win her, one of Javonbury’s four most beautiful women, heart tonight? This is so embarrassing!”
“What a clown. He should go back to the circus. I knew it–how could Ms. Sloan fall for someone who looks good but is actually useless?”
“She must’ve turned Calvin down because of Ashton. Ms. Sloan must still love Ashton!”
“Man, the secondhand embarrassment is strong. Proposing in public and getting rejected in public… This is going to be a lifelong trauma.”
“Heh! Calvin can’t compare to Ashton–of course Ms. Sloan would reject him! I swear she still has feelings for him. Think about how in love they used to be…”
Some of Summit Lounge’s employees immediately reveled in Calvin’s misfortune. They’d long been fed up with him, and they missed the days when Ashton was still at Summit Lounge.

Every word was like a knife stabbing Calvin in the chest, piling on his shame.
“So, Roxy isn’t totally blind after all. What a pity…”
Sylvia clicked her tongue, looking disappointed as she watched Roxy reject Calvin’s proposal. She didn’t want Roxy to have any chance of going back to Ashton.
“See, Ashton? Roxy still has a place in her heart for you!”
Renee’s face lit up with joy, and her heart finally settled back in her chest.
Even Celia clapped happily.
Meanwhile, Ashton’s face was blank. He had no interest in Roxy’s decision. He only felt a little regretful that he had no reason to take Celia away from the Sloans.
The roses in Calvin’s hands fell to the floor. He sprang to his feet and glared at Roxy. “Why are you rejecting me? Aren’t we a match made in heaven?”
