Chapter 198
“That’s enough! If Emerson Group ever chooses to oppose Mr. Gray, you’ll instantly incur a lifelong, irreconcilable feud with me!” Christian declared firmly, taking a definitive stand with Ashton.
He knew that anything less than complete fealty was betrayal.
He thought that, in comparison to Ashton and the knowledge of the Ninefold Arcane Technique, the entire Emerson Group was completely insignificant.
Calvin lowered his head, not daring to utter another word.
Roxy observed the entire scene in silence, her eyes dull as she studied the composed Ashton and the adoring Sylvia.
She felt a deep sense of unease welling within her as she wondered if her family would still have to endure such humiliation today if she were still Ashton’s wife. Did that mean that the gold invitation to Auric Night would have been rightfully theirs as well?
She was startled as soon as this realization dawned on her. She discovered that she was already consumed by regret over divorcing Ashton.
She forcefully told herself that she didn’t regret it as she looked back at Ashton with an utterly indifferent gaze, yet the remorse inside was multiplying uncontrollably, impossible to extinguish.
Ashton stated coldly, “You ought to know that the primary tenet of the Arcane Medicine Association is to offer aid only to the deserving and deny it to the condemned!
“If you proceed to treat Tanya, that wicked shrew, then your status as my mentee will be immediately revoked! You’d better weigh your decision carefully, Christian!”
Christian bowed even lower in subservience, his expression fraught with fear. “I beg your forgiveness for my momentary folly, Mr. Gray! Calvin has misled me! If I had known that Tanya was such a malicious woman, I would never have treated her!
“I hope you’ll give me one more chance, Mr. Gray. I swear I’ll never provide medical assistance to any member of the Sloan family for the rest of my life!”
Upon hearing that, Tanya, who had been clinging to a sliver of hope, turned ghastly pale. She felt her body swaying precariously as she was engulfed in utter despair. Had her decade–long stomach condition reached a stage where Ashton was the only one capable of healing it?
Ashton smiled faintly as he swept past Roxy without a glance, escorting Sylvia out with a possessive arm around her waist. Christian, on the other hand, immediately fell into place behind them.
Tanya slumped weakly onto the seat as she gazed at Ashton and the others‘ retreating figures, her brow furrowing tightly together.
“I genuinely had no clue about Christian and Ashton’s connection, Mrs. Sloan! If I had, I never would have brought Christian to treat you. I’ll definitely seek out another renowned doctor to treat your stomach condition. -I’ll make sure of that, Mrs. Sloan!” Calvin declared earnestly.
Tanya’s lifeless gaze gradually focused on Calvin before suddenly snapping, “Get out of my sight right now!

How would that good–for–nothing Ashton have humiliated me twice today if not for you, Calvin?
“You’re utterly useless! How dare you think you’re worthy of Roxy? You’d better give up on the idea of pursuing Roxy, as she’ll never settle for trash like you! Get out of here now!”
Calvin’s face betrayed a whirlwind of emotions. He tried to defend himself but was tongue–tied. He could only fix Roxy with a tender gaze and ask, “You grasped my intentions, right, Roxy?”
Roxy let out a barely audible sigh before replying, “I get your intentions, and I know you never meant for this to happen, Calvin.”
Calvin exclaimed, “You’re the best, Roxy! I
”
Roxy cut Calvin off, saying, “I think it’s best if we limit our interactions going forward and take some time apart, Calvin. You shouldn’t waste your energy chasing me. I believe there is a better partner out there for you.‘
That single statement shattered Calvin, twisting his features in despair. “Do you not see how much I love you, Roxy? I abandoned my life abroad just to return to you, Roxy!”
Calvin’s features were a mask of furious indignation and absolute refusal to submit.
Roxy stated firmly, “You have your liberty, and I have mine, Calvin.”
She then turned to Tanya and said, “Let’s go, Mom.”
Having said that, Roxy refused to spare Calvin another glance. She supported the psychologically shattered Tanya and led her away from the scene.
