Ashton didn’t respond. He simply found that Roxy felt like a complete stranger to him now.

In the past, when he looked at Roxy, he’d thought she was the woman he’d devote his entire life to—someone he would protect even at the cost of his life.

But now, he sorely wanted to give himself a few good slaps. Why had he been so blind back then? Why did he ever fall for such a worthless woman?

The old him had been trapped in the whirlpool of what he thought was love, unable to see the kind of person Roxy truly was. He could see clearly now.

Ashton laughed.

“Why are you laughing?”

“No reason. From this day onward, you and I are two completely separate people who have nothing to do with each other. There’s only hatred between us, no love,” Ashton said coolly.

“As for the ten million dollars, you can keep it. However, once the Sloan family goes bankrupt, and you run out of options, I’ll give you ten million dollars as a last gesture of kindness to repay you for your offer today.”

“Ashton! Why do you have to be so stubborn?” Roxy fumed. “Do you really think you can win custody of Celia? Do you really think that in just a year, you can become richer than me? Wake up! Stop confusing fantasy with reality!”

“Why are you wasting your breath on him, Roxy? I’d rather you feed the ten million dollars to dogs than give it to him! If he gets his hands on that money, he’ll fight you even harder for custody of Celia,” Calvin declared.

Just then, his eyes lit up. “That’s it! Roxy, I finally figured out why Ashton is insisting on challenging you for Celia’s custody.”

“Why?”

“Because he wants to use Celia to demand a ton in child support from you! Think about it. If Celia goes with Ashton, she’ll be his ticket to wealth. He’ll surely use her to threaten you. What a vile and deplorable man he is! I’ve never met anyone this shameless before!”

Calvin’s veins were popping as he ranted with a look of righteous indignation.

Briefly startled, Roxy soon realized what Calvin was implying, and she bought into it as well.

“That explains everything! Ashton, is Celia nothing but a bargaining chip to you? To think that she cried an entire night because of you! You’re not worthy of being her father!” Roxy snarled icily.

“Think what you want. But remember this–if Celia suffers even the slightest grievance in the upcoming year, and if anyone in the Sloan family so much as dares to mistreat her, I’ll see to it that your family is ruined. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Ashton brushed past Roxy. Wasting his breath on a foolish woman like her was a poor use of his time. He had far too many things to do to continue mincing words with her. He’d only done his best to rein in his temper because she was Celia’s mother.

“You stop right there, Ashton!” Roxy screeched. He’d pissed her off. “Since you’re so determined to fight me for custody of Celia, and since you’re shamelessly bold enough to claim that you can surpass me in assets in just a year, then why don’t we find a proper agreement to make it official?”

“What agreement?”

“A year from now, if your assets surpass mine, you’ll get custody of Celia, and I promise to admit that everything that happened was my fault. I’ll even get on my knees and apologize to you.

“However, if you fail to surpass me in assets, then I forbid you from ever seeing Celia again! She doesn’t need a father like you!”
