Natalie stiffened. She had no way of refuting Ashton’s words, for everything he said was true. If not for him, she would’ve gone through hell by now.

If it hadn’t been for him, the parasitic poison inside her body would’ve continued to torment her, putting her through an agony that was worse than death.

“Doctors are supposed to have compassion! Can’t you just save me without expecting anything in return? Must you insist on humiliating me?” Natalie snapped through gritted teeth.

Ashton reached out and stroked her face, saying, “Do you remember what I said, Ms. York? Everything comes with a price.”

Natalie turned her head away, but she couldn’t get away from his touch.

Gripping her by the jaw, he continued icily, “You’ve already gone back on your agreement with me once, Ms. York. I’ll give you one last choice. You can acknowledge me as your master and submit completely to my will. If you do that, you’ll be my woman, and it’ll be my responsibility to save you.

“Or, I can leave right now. We can go back to being strangers, and you can slowly let the poison torment you to death. Make your choice, Ms. York.”

Natalie quaked.

Seeing Ashton now, she was hit with a sense of terror. Her gut was telling her that if she refused to acknowledge him as her master now, they would become enemies. She wouldn’t be able to find anyone who could save her from the poison, and she would be subjected to a miserable fate.

But to have her acknowledge a man as her master and completely submit to his will?

She couldn’t convince herself to do that.

“What will I have to do if I acknowledge you as my master?” Natalie asked, her tone softening.

She studied Ashton carefully out of the corner of her eye.

“Everything!” Ashton replied.

Natalie’s expression hardened. If she agreed to Ashton’s demand, wouldn’t that make her his plaything?

After thinking in silence for a moment, she suddenly looked up, her eyes bright. Leaning in close, she said seductively, “I can consider acknowledging you as my master, but you’ve got to prove your capabilities first. That’s the only way to convince me.

“I’m sure you don’t want me to be insincere about submitting to you, right?”

“What kind of capabilities am I supposed to prove?”

After observing Natalie, Ashton knew her resistance was weakening a little. Once the walls started to fall, it would only be a matter of time.

Tucking her hair away, Natalie said, “My friend, Sheila Beldon, and I once made a bet to see who could find the more powerful man. The one who chose the more powerful man would win.
